I guess I'm late to the party but anyway some people are actually asking the same question in 2020 lol! There is an app on Playstore called Opensignal, it gives you all the information about your carrier.

I think your answer to the signal problem is an external antennae.
Actually been meaning to find this situation and see if throwing a sheet of tinfoil (like a dish of it) would help prevent it from pickup other towers... hmmm...

I am facing a similar problem with Rain. I was getting less than 1MB/s download speed and up to 4MB/s upload using internal antenna on Huawei B525. I read somewhere that an LTE antenna would help me and I purchased an XPOL-6 High gain antenna. Put it up and only managed to get 1MB/s gain with external antenna. These are the following values I'm getting

RSRP -75dBm
RSRQ -14.0dB
RSSI >=-51dBm
SINR 8dB

What could I do to make an improvement to the signal? I am just 90 meters away from a tower but I'm failing to get any signals. I faced the antenna to another tower about 1km away and those figures above are my findings.

If you are getting those stats, and still only getting a 1MB/s speed (10mbps download) then your tower is congested as all heck. With 6-10dB and similar other stats we push 40-50mbps (4-6MB/s) download.

But seeing as your upload if vastly faster, make sure the router is using 2600Mhz TDD. Im sure others can advise you as to how the band tool and that works. But 1800Mhz is always congested.

The main reason vodacom/cellc/rain/mtn does not make tower locations openly available is for theft reasons.Sort of dumb but yea
they find it before they install it. proudly sa

Okay, so you guys probably want to know how I managed to get this information.

Very easy, actually.

1. Register an account with the following website:

https://unwiredlabs.com/home

2. Log in with the details that they send you by email.

(They use a token as password.)

3. Change the 'Request' drop-down box to '1 Cell - LTE' as in the image:

View attachment 473558

4. Make the following changes to the listed fields:

MCC >> 655

MNC >> 19

LAC >> 27

CID >> Enter your Cell ID here.

5. Click on the 'Submit' button and see the result.

If it doesn't give you a result with the MNC set to 19, change it to 01. Rain and Vodacom seems to share equipment in some places.

This of course also works with the other networks as well.

MNC 01 >> Vodacom

MNC 02 >> Telkom

MNC 07 >> Cell C

MNC 10 >> MTN

MNC 12 >> MTN

MNC 19 >> Rain

MNC 38 >> Rain

MNC 73 >> Rain

MNC 74 >> Rain

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_country_code#South_Africa_-_ZA

I don't think the last three MNC's of Rain are relevant here, but I listed them just for the sake of interest.

The 'accuracy' field should also provide a clue as how accurate this result is. The higher the number, the wider the area of the location of the identified cell is, which makes it more difficult to locate the tower.

Any developers know if this API can be integrated into an app to make it easier for forumites to locate their towers?
Your explanation and effort is really admired. Thank you But unffortunetly it didnt work for me. details are attached.

You can just use the rain optimiser tool to see your current tower location on google maps. It also shows you other nearby towers.
