  • The first of more than 100 privately owned power plants being developed will connect to the grid by the end of this year. In total, the planned projects could produce 9,000 megawatts, much of it for the companies’ own use.

Wait, what? Thought only Eskom could own/develop power plants unless this is talking about renewables.

If these c*nts are serious about alleviating the burden on Eskom, why don't they immediately release legislation that ensures ALL solar generation equipment, and sundries, are zero rated AND introduce a solar tax benefit for those that have/want solar installed but can't feed back into the grid?

We all know the answer to this conundrum - they are too greedy, ignorant and stupid to come up with real solutions that impact their vote-buying schemes!

* more than 100 privately owned power plants being developed
Private as in owned and managed by connected cronies / BEE?

* Six of Eskom’s 14 coal-fired power plants have been “identified for particular focus”
I can identify loads of problems for particular focus too; without timelines and deadlines it means sweet fokol.

So the usual empty promises and bla bla bla to make it seem they are doing something to justify their existence :-(

We are so ****ed!

I'd like a list of these as it would be interesting to know who has been allowed to produce their own power at such scale.

I think its renewable. If you go up the west coast there are wind and solar farms over every hill.

These companies must still be created, LOL! The ANC is busy working hard at this.

I think its been largely based on speculation. Private investors just watching what has been happening here and hedging their bets.

I know you can self provide though as well. So I think its not impossible that a mine or manufacturing plant would be able to supply their own power - much like we do at home.

The statement comes across as there is already commitment for some private businesses to hook into the grid and provide some extra power though? If it's still speculation, then it really is just hot air for now.

Na, there is already legal action happening right now to allow municipalities to self provide, most likely funded by said businesses.
These guys will be ready to go as soon as the gates are in place - for now though they are probably just self providing.

You will not fix the electricity crisis in this place, without downsizing (correct-sizing!) The eskom workforce. The short-term problems are technical. The long-term problems are financial.

The unions and ANC ideology will not allow this. So eskom will not be fixed.
