I dont really think there is too much gold in this area...but ja...we have the pollution problem and then naturally the crime issue...theft from local farms and attacks on a few of the locals so far.
So it's a crime issue and not pollution, because surely if it was pollution then the army should be clearing out all the illegal settlements that are polluting the rivers.

Sadly the other river is polluted with sewerage that constantly overflows at some pump station down in the local kasi...thats because the pumps keep being stolen and now I think there is no more money/interest to replace them.

SA ANC solution; pump the sewage down the zama zama "mines" and stink them out. Bad for the environment and maybe the zama zamas are a hardy breed that don't mind a bit of a smell.

Nothing will go or grow there for 20 years.

Yes, stuff like this, divert the army seeing they're in the area already. SANDF don't use rubber bullets.

I agree that the spending is less, but it is far more complex than that. The officer / troop ratio in the SANDF is nowhere that it was in the SADF, as is the average age of combatants, plus the ratio of soldiers that are fit to serve vs those that aren't (the SANDF is filled with people that are unfit for duty, a result of cadre deployment). And all attempts to maintain what used to be world class infrastructure (1 Military Hospital is a perfect example) is stymied through graft, corruption and theft.
@vigras rojara

The average age for a rifleman in the SANDF is 34, and a lance corporal is 44. These non-commissioned ranks are supposed to be 18 and 19-20 year-olds. The SAAF has an aircraft serviceability rate of 15%.

And here is an article to support my claim:

Maybe they, along with the EFF, could go help Hamas.
Most of the bloated EFF comrades could not even fit in the tunnels. Reasonable bullet proofing for those behind, as if any EFF comrade would actually go first into such an environment.

I don't think the SADF was ever a "force to be reckoned with".
Apartheid SA weren't very successful as far as I'm concerned.
They fought a protracted border war and the outcome was a complete loss of their original objectives.
At best the propaganda machine was hard at work back then convincing the safers of the time of how successful, incredible, etc. everyone involved was.

Realistically wars are incredible expensive, not just financially, in every respect, so if the outcomes are divisive, an enormous blunder was made.
It is exactly why the US is criticized for every conflict since WW2, especially Vietnam and Afghanistan.
I would disagree with you.

SADF were in the top 10 if not top 5 in the world when it was the SADF.

Right now BAFANA BAFANA would probably kick the SANDF's @ss.

Jane's Defence Weekly rated the SADF as #1 land force in the Southern Hemisphere back in the day. This under severe sanctions, which is why we never achieved it in air and sea.
