With these words, President Cyril Ramaphosa has, for the first time, denied knowing Hangwani Morgan Maumela, his nephew from a previous marriage, who scored close to R400 million from public hospitals in dodgy tenders.

On Thursday, Ramaphosa was in the National Assembly to respond to questions from MPs.

DA leader John Steenhuisen asked Ramaphosa about broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) schemes and the impact it has had so far.

“The Zondo Commission showed that BBBEE has been central to corruption in South Africa. Whether it is the R14 billion PPE corruption in Covid-19 or the billions stolen at Eskom. A recent example, one of your own nephew's companies scored R381 million from Gauteng hospitals. You are right. It does not benefit the majority. It only benefits ANC-connected cronies.

Hence the reason for my sarcastic comment. They are not even related. Not even by marriage. A cousin of my wife is not a cousin of mine. The media headline of his cousin is sensationalist. Easy as that.

Well they have so many, I won't be surprised if there is some serious inbreeding they are not aware of, or maybe they just do not care.

The culprit is actually John's counterpart leader's nephew by that leader's previous marriage. I don't know why John is so against it as it seems he is closely related.

For some odd reason the thread was posted in off topic, I wonder why, lack of confidence maybe?

But I did go in there like a disciplined cadre, it was hostile but I wasn't afraid, we are trained properly to deal with this stuff, I managed to put out the fires.

Is there a link to a proper article? And how exactly are they related or not related?

He is apparently a nephew of Cyril's first wife, they divorced in the 80s, of course Cyril took him as his own nephew as we always do in our culture, because blood is thicker than water Cyril never lost touch even after the divorce, as soon as he rose to power he made sure his favourite nephew was taken care of.

Hope? They divorced in 1989 and have a son together (Thanks Wiki). This dude will be his son's cousin... and yet he says he has no idea who he is? Sounds a tad fishy to me tbh

To this day I still don't know all my cousins, I only know the one's I grew up with, I know for a fact that my old man doesn't know all his nephews and nieces, and mean his sister's children, not some distant nephews by marriage.

It's really not that hard not to know your own family, relatives by marriage you will know as far as your wife allows you, if she tells you "that one is never to be trusted, stay away from him or her", you do exactly that, you won't have a relationship with that person and you won't know their children, who might be your children's cousins.

Which is not impossible if you are estranged.... but it's most certain this nephew would have used the family name to get ahead.

I am with @TheChamp on this one. I will defend CR on this.

I barely know my own cousins and will likely not recognize most of them should I come across them.

Let alone the children of brothers and sisters of my exes. Hell, I would not even know where to start. I damn well suspect that some of my exe's sisters' children my well be my own.... but I still do not know any of them.

He also has a sister. The nephew's name is Hangwani Morgan Maumela, looks like he chose a different surname so that he wouldn't blow his cover.
