I wonder how far I'll have to drive if I want to buy booze over the weekend?

Shouldn't be all that far...

Shebeens are always open, and always willing to sell at reasonable(ish) prices.

I get the alcohol idea, but the curfew is ridiculous. Imagine in a township where 1000's of people all leave restaurants/taverns at the same time to walk home. That in itself is a super spreader event..

Out of interest, how do you think the alcohol thing helps/makes any difference?

Cause it floods the emergency rooms, it makes peoples inhibitions lower so they don't wear masks and they forget social distancing. There are the arguments.

To me a curfew makes more sense than curtailing alcohol. Not that either will have much of an impact.

People earning a living aren't the ones spending their free time in crowded malls and partying...I didn't say stay home and don't work...don't be daft

I see many more sober people than drunk people ignoring social distancing and mask wearing.
OK, I do not know all that many drunk people, but mask wearing and social distancing is the exception to the rule where I work and live.

Alcohol control does not work as well as one might think, it moves distribution and sales to illegal channels and makes it more expensive.
Yes it does mean fewer people will drink, but I doubt it has much of an impact on abusers, they will make a plan.

We need to go back to something similar to stage 5.

Alcohol ban.
Curfew from 9pm.
Special permits for those who need to work.
No interprovincial travel.
That was stage 3, stage 5 was complete shutdown whereby a lot of people didn't work, restaurants were closed, takeaways, no flipflops, no clothes, nothing but essentials.
By the way you still need permits to work, especially if you're out past midnight...

I actually don't think alcohol control has any impact on the number of people who drink... all it does is shift around buying patterns, and probably increase instances of binge drinking.

It makes people forget that we are in a pandemic and forget to stay safe and keep others safe. Simple really.

Doesn't mean having 1 whiskey makes you guilty of that, but unfortunately, we have people who can't control themselves..."adults" acting like children.

Gauteng's statistics are known to be garbage. I am deeply suspicious that this is nothing more than a targeted attack on the Cape.

The lockdown measures being touted seem to be aimed more at attacking the hospitality and tourism industry than having any relevance to preventing the spread of a virus.

The dubious disaster management act only empowers direct interventions for a specific disaster - there has been no scientific or statistical evidence that any of the lockdown measures employed so far, let alone selling alcohol on some days and not others, has any bearing on the spread of this virus. Thus, any such measures are undemocratic, illegal and unconstitutional decrees which you are in your rights to resist.

Yes? Where did I say people who work? I'm talking about the dumb morons who are going about their lives as if nothing is wrong. Those in malls, those having gatherings in large groups, those who can't wear a bloody mask properly.
