Ramaphosa promises more affordable broadband for South Africans

On Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled the government’s economic recovery plan, which included interventions to make broadband more affordable.

Part of the government’s plan is to “reduce data costs for every South African and expand broadband access to low-income households”.

“The release of high-frequency spectrum by March 2021 and the completion of digital migration will reduce data costs for firms and households,” Ramaphosa said.

A good start would be to provide an incentive for fiber operators to deploy in small towns.

I have a list of over 120 households and businesses ready to sign up for fiber, which is not too bad for our small town, but excuses range from "the town is too small" to "it will simply be too expensive without an anchor (big) user".
We have DFA presence, mostly for the banks and mobile operators. MTN is providing fiber to one big customer.

Getting fiber to smaller town around major cities would enable people to move to smaller towns and work from home, for those that can. This will also keep the smaller town alive, as more-and-more people are moving to big cities for work, or simply to have better connectivity.

Ex cit. Jeez, this guy promises a lot. Just like his 4IR last year I think. Seems they good @ saving speeches and pull them out a couple of years later. Forgot to add, that although there is no positive news about SA that I can gather, they sure as hell are good comedians.

Cyril goes bigger than his predecessors with promises of bullet trains and smart cities. Massive promises are massive. He heralds the dawn of the new dawn with fewer steps to the new dawn. Anytime you can reduce the steps or time to implement massive change you are on to something revolutionary.

Amazing how many of these timelines we have that show their utter incompetence over the last 20 years. And still we have idiots defending them with "so much progress has been made".
