Well, if one only ever uses the car for work commute is would seem nonsensical, but we use cars for other things too, normally a few times a year, that easily racks up more than 200km.

And in SA getting stranded can easily turn deadly, it's not just an inconvenience.

I have a client who lives +/- 40km out of town on a small farm. He has a little BMW electric car, as well as full off-grid solar on the farm. He also keeps a Land Rover Defender for long trips.
He told me he hadn't bought fuel since March 2020 and also hadn't fired up the Defender since then, as lockdown meant he really had nowhere to go apart from into town.
So I guess in his usage case an electric car makes a lot of sense. It's range means he can do any of Sedgefield / Knysna / George and return and always get home to charge up from his own (free) solar.
Zero fuel bills of any kind for almost two years!

I'm sure this range anxiety also applied to ICE cars when there were not so many petrol stations around.
