Am having major problem with Range Rover 3.5l V8, petrol. Severe lack of power at low revs and, strangely, in the lower gears. On low revs, it has no torque and the engine feels dead in the water. However, as the revs increase the engine will suddenly "come alive" and the car will shoot forward with the torque even without sudden pedal movement. The latter seems to happen well over 3000rpm while the low rev problem is under 2000. Wtf is wrong? Have tried the air filter and spark plugs but to no avail. Any ideas?

You don't say how old the car is, but having had the misfortune of having to drive one of the early Rangies many years ago, the car was totally dead, unless you revved the hell out of it. The early ones had a massive problem with low down torque. That should have been sorted out in newer ones, however.

It's the 1989-90 Vogue and the problem only surfaced recently. An uncle of mine has the exact same car and it cruises up 35 degree desert dunes in low revs with no trouble. The issue is not inherent, it started happening a few months ago.

A couple of things spring to mind :

1. Spark plug timing
2. Valve timing
3. Might be a brake which's "dragging" and robbing the engine of torque

You can also try to obtain an Owners Workshop Manual (from CNA) for your specific car/model and see whether they will cover the causes of this problem in it as well.

Cheers!

As the Librarian says, it could be any number of things. A 20 year old Range rover can suddenly becvome a very expensive beast to maintain, I am afraid!!

When last did you change plug leads? I had a similar problem on my 95 4.6 and a set of new leads solved it.

Someone give that man a Bells! :wtf:

Fark! is that a record for a thread necro?
I actually read up till the point of Ook's post and realised something was wrong - been a while since Ook signed off a post with "Cheers Libs" :p :D

Nope.
Two months ago we had a spree of 5-7yo threads being removed from their mummy-costumes...
