Shoprite customer data is being auctioned on the dark web

Customer data stolen from Africa’s largest supermarket chain is being auctioned by dark web extortion market RansomHouse, with bidding open at 20 bitcoin (R6.7 million).

Shoprite fell victim to the cyber extortion gang earlier this month, initially stating that there was a “possible data compromise” affecting some money transfer clients.

Why would Shoprite really care? There are no consequences. If the people affected were to lose funds or an entrepreneurial lawyer could actually get funds out of the them then it would matter, perhaps.

At this stage, it's a minor inconvenience to them.

Isn't the money transfer thing just uses cellnos? What data other than cellnos do they have?

Isnt 20 bicoin a bit much? There is already a lot of data on the web.
It makes me wonder if the sentiment about the data consisting of mostly low-income customers is true. Perhaps Shoprite's service is a lucrative money-laundering platform.
