you know you are being ripped off when your internet bill is more than your fuel bill

during the last financial year

I don't travel much, I did 9649 km according to my log.

During the same period I used 177.9GB

Paid 50.9% more for internet than my fuel bill.

And that excludes Vodacom 3G when the wifi does not work!

I am using a wisp since the closest free wifi hotspot (that I know of) is 180 km away.

Ah - I thought you meant the cost of wifi whilst traveling . Any reason you're not using ADSL or a mobile package like 8ta or Afrihost? How much do you pay for wisp btw and how much data are you allocated?

Where I live those r not options. Vodacom 3g or the wifi. Both cost more than my fuel bill. The only other option is satellite and that is more expensive, comes with latency and caps.
