MK1 had small tail lights, and no white strip at the bottom.

I also thought that at first but I am not so sure so will have to look again, I couldn't spot the L shaped press in the c-pillar which was not a feature of MkI Golf's but was of CitiGolf's and can't remember if the first CitiGolf's had them. You are wrong that MkI Golf's had small tail lights, only Series I had them, Series II had the larger tail lights.

You are correct, I too missed the L shaped press in the C pillar. So it could be a bastardised Mk1 made to look like an original Citi. I never knew about the Series II having the larger tail lights. Today I learned.
