Rates bill increase of 14.8%

So I got my Rates bill SMS just now and I see it went up by 14.8%. How can the government justify increases that much above inflation?

Its essentially two bills in one, tax and refuse. Tax went up 11% with no valuation change to my house and refuse went up 21%.

I am beginning to hate City of JHB. As I understand it electricity also just went up.

My rates went up more than 100%, they doubled the value of my house.

It is completely incorrect, I put it on the market, the highest offer I got was less than half their value.

Estate agents also gave low valuations.

Complete idiots.

It should be made law that they cannot increase any taxes above CPI.

You mean you have not received 14.8% increased service levels? :) It sucks hey, although why to single out COJ? Inflation seems to be affecting literally every area in life (government and otherwise).

I don't know, COJ seem to be at the top of a pyramid of incompetence.

City of JHB has not sent my complex an electricity bill since May 2010. When they migrated systems they closed our account and have not been able to open one and send a bill since. Our main meter broke in the interim so we are using power but have no idea if we will ever get another bill and if so what amount it will be. Its crazy how incompetent they are. We litterely have millions of rands collected in an account earning interest that we are accruing from residents monthly and we want to give it to them if they could just fix the meter, and send us a fair bill of some kind. I heard of another complex that had the same issue that finally got a bill years later that was 10 times what it should have been and within a week power was cut to the entire complex despite them trying to reasonably query the bill and the fact that CoJ took 10 years to send it to them despite years of them pleading for it to be sorted out. The fact that we have to deal with incompetent scum like that infuriates me.
