So what is the real benefits of getting a gold credit card, other than getting a higher credit limit?
As I see it, you pay a higher annual card fee just to get the status. So it's like a status thing? or am I missing something?

Some banks give you a preferential rate too, I think.

You don't have to provide 3 months bank statements / payslip when opening an account, which I discovered last week to my profound happiness :)

Dude, take a look at what is going on around you!

You do not want that card - anything with the word 'debt' or 'possible debt' attached to it should be totally ignored!

with gold cards you get better treatment at the bank, and in some cases you get better rates, also you get access other facilities (such as airport lounges) I know with the discovery platinum card you get a special number to dial when you have a query that is axclusive to platinum cards only

I have no credit cards, store cards or any debt and I am the better for it. If you don't have the cash for it then you don't need it.:D

Debit card? contains the word debt? Yet in terms of what you saying is better then a credit card cause you cant spend what you dont have.

Take the card if you want, as long as you using it as a method for easy payment and not for the credit facility.

Back to topic though, i dont think you get any benefits apart from the increased limit, or I havent been told of what the benefits are.

I have 4 credit cards ... saved me for 3 months while unemployed.

Had I listened to many people who told me 'stay away' or 'don't let them increase your limit', I'd be fscked right now. But because I could everything on them, I got through the 3 months and all was alright :)

Even now people say close the 3 and use only 1, but that 1 limit is not enough *if* something happened. If a bank gave me a great limit on the 1, then I'd close the others.

Same que's, same consultants ... same service ... higher annual fees
and in some cases you get better rates,
rates are negotiable based on your financial situation and your willingness to negotiate. I've had rates just as good on a normal bond as I've had on bond linked to fancy-schmancy-bellsandwhistles accounts

also you get access other facilities (such as airport lounges)
hmmm... never come across this one... in my experience cattle class ticket relegates one to cattle class lounge, business class ticket means a promotion to the business class lounge.
I'll have to flash my platinum card next time I travel cattle class and see if I can get access to the Virgin business class lounge... worth a try at least

I know with the discovery platinum card you get a special number to dial when you have a query that is axclusive to platinum cards only
Same call centre... same agents ... trust me on this one.

Prioritised queries
Much better rates for all debt
Fast turnaround times
Personal banker (deal with one individual for practically all issues and they know you on a fairly personal basis)
More free transactions (which does work out cheaper if you're transacting on a frequent basis, even though the monthly cost is slightly higher)

This is with Standard Bank's Private Banking which is platinum status though...

I think you not sperating the benefits you get from private banking vs benfits of having a gold card. Two very different things.

Now here's the thing ... I get that same treatment with my stock standard blue SB suite of products as I get with my platimum "status" fnb accounts.

The difference for me has always been the branch and the branch manager.
Just my experiences I guess

NO, not the business class lounges, but other lounges (not sure what they’re called) – these lounges aren’t as good as the business class lounges, but they’re better than nothing – Our company subscribes to “Priority Pass” and I use the lounges often.

Yip, Diner's Club platinum cardholders get into Diners club lounges, unfortunately not many of the airports I fly from have these lounges. But it's great if you fly around Europe a lot.
