An LED lamb?

Why not get a normal torch and some rechargeable batteries?

EDIT - I have seen small brick brick like lanterns at Builders Warehouse.

O/T How about I change that thread title for you ;)

I bought my LED Lamps in a 2 pack from Cape Union Mart, cant remember exactly what the price was but they are worth it and good quality stuff compared to the china ones which we had problems with then returned them.

They are quite bright and is a lamp or torch in one, looks like its R399 for the 2 pack which is technically less than R200 each :p
100 hours run time - 4 LED flashlight unit, 50 hours run time - 24 LED lamp unit

Eventually went for an LED torch at Game for R99. I only used it once because they sorted the power cuts now. I will use it one day.

www.geewiz.co.za has some nice 32led and 48led Emergency lamps (you plug them into the wall socket and forget about them).

They charge to full. Then go into standby. The moment the power dies... this light goes on and then lasts from 8hours to 24hours. Depending on which one you buy.

It's very good.

Very surprised how expensive this one is now. I got one many months ago and paid closer to R300 - works well and has a indicator that shows when it is done charging.

The fluorescent tube ones use too much power for long outtages, we have something similar and they last 4 hours on single tube mode and 2 on double tube. Switch them on manually (single tube mode, they are in the lesser used rooms) when there is loadshedding at night so they don't waste battery power with daytime loadshedding, they cannot handle stage 3. In the second load shedding period they die, haven't recharged enough in the break.

LED is way better on battery life.

I use the below (they go on automatically when the power fails), they can easily last 50 hours on lantern mode(someone tested them to 40 hours and then stopped the test, was still at full brightness), 100hours on torch mode, between charges. Also has USB output port for device charging:

The following has all the above and FM radio and can play MP3s. I think I'll get one of them to supplement the rest:

Here is something a bit cheaper with less functions and life, also from UltraTec range (coming soon status):

Just be very weary of cheap rechargeable gadgets from China through BOB. I bought 2 rechargeable lights and both almost caught fire whilst on charge. The one, luckily I am in the habit of and a rule in my house, was on the kitchen top and when I caught it it was melting and smoke everywhere the other just went POP when I plugged it in to charge.
Rather buy this sort of thing at a reputable dealer.
