Hey folks

Have been asked to put together a proposal to replace a flat layer 2 LAN/WLAN at a school.

Approx 100 wired and 50 wireless user devices (maybe more) spread out over admin block, media centre, two computer rooms, reading room, etc, etc. One existing Rocket M5 & five AirGrid's on the roof as well for connectivity.

Looking at deploying the Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch 24 Lite in each needed room with one UniFi AP in each as well - 6 EdgeSwitch 24 Lite units & 6 UAP for now, may scale up as funds become available. Each EdgeSwitch will have a trunk SFP port back to the core via multi-mode fibre carrying 3 or 4 VLAN's (staff/pupils/management/guests).

What I'm stuck on is a decent Layer 3 switch to act as my "core", routing VLAN's and necessary switch ports for the two Hyper-V hosts. Ubiquiti come up short in this department unfortunately.

Any recommendations on HP/TP-LINK/D-LINK/NETGEAR/etc... preferably under the R6k/R7k mark? Needing 24 copper Gigabit ports and 4 SFP ports - must be able to route between the VLAN's at line rate.

Many thanks

You could probably get a decent cisco refurb switch for that price.

Forgot to add.... I might not stick around in Durban forever so whoever else gets recruited to take my place would probably be far more at ease with a web interface as opposed to CLI or RouterOS.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Either the Ubiquiti EdgeMax/Unifi Switches or MikroTik RouterOS Cloud Switches
