I am going to be replacing a VCR\DVD combo with something that can record TV to Hard drive. I can't find much choice besides the odd LG or Philips (Makro: LG DVD Recorder 320GB HDD for R2699, etc.)

I don't need something that can play DVD's as my old VCR\DVD combo can still be used for that.

What about the MviX boxes? I don't need PC connectivity or all the bells and whistles, just a box that can record TV, etc.

Any suggestions ( < R2500 if possible ???)

Thanks

LG RH387. Only has 160GB HDD
It still has DVD Drive. Handy for copying recorded stuff to DVD.

I bought mine for R1899.

Rather get a Tivo, it can automatically record all your programs without you having to manually set the time. Guide data is downloaded via the Internet.

Check http://tivoza.nanfo.com for more info.

Would'nt suggest anything LG, just returned from their repair center where I dropped off mine, second time with a faulty DVD mechanism. The quoted me R700 to repair - told them it's not on as it's the same problem as before.

nk1 your the first to have a bum LG that I've heard odd. In my PC retail days LG DVD writers where the best.

But anyway, I've got the LG PVR and really happy. The DVD is just a bonus as you can write your recorded movies to it. My brother has had his LG PVR for a few years and is really happy too.

Im also very happy with mine.
I actually love the fact that you can play DivX movies via USB. That and TV recording is the features I use the most.

Are you able to transfer the movies stored on the internal hard drive of the LG PVR to say... a computer instead of burning to DVD? Can you record to an external HDD or flash drive plugged into the USB port?

Nope.
I just use a DVD-RW. Writes pretty fast.
I must add that the USB is only 1.0 so copying from USB to HDD is not recommended because it takes a while.

More choices please....

Thanks for the replies so far. I am tempted to go the TiVo route, but it sounds like a lot of work and risk for a small gain in cost.

I notice that no-one has mentioned any other type besides the LG that I have also managed to find. Are there no other makes out there....??

There is a very nice Sony model I saw, but for me it was not worth paying R1000 extra.

I have the older LG RH 7624W. Whatever brand you get I cant stress the importance of an extended warranty from a reputable seller. Luckily i bought mines with 3 year extended.
I have used it 3 times.

I have the Sony 250GB. Took it with 1 year + 3 years extended warranty.

After almost 4 years the DVD writer packed in. They've ordered a replacement writer from Singapore and will be billing the shop R1900 for the repair. Don't see myself paying that after my warranty expires and it gives in again. Apparently the writer is only good for about 200 writes which is probably true across all brands.

I have a TiVo as well which is far superior.

I use a Panasonic. Very legal. good video quality. Only does what the sabc allows it to do.
My brother bought a Toshiba the other day, good price, he is very happy with it.

LG= oops = low grade, thats what their techie said.
A friend of mine loves LG, easy to fix because he get see a lot of them inside.

Any chance of getting the model numbers/price/store for the Panasonic or the Toshiba?

I can't find any hits for anything besides LG! Even the panasonic website comes up blank for these items.

Found it!

In the end I found a great Toshiba for a reasonable price. 160Gb but that is more than enough for me (not that much on that is worth recording.....)
I still find it strange that my choice was limited to the LG or Toshiba (Sony is way too expensive for the same functionality).
