Recommend dog food

My Jack Russell has just hit 1 year so it's time to wean her off puppy food. She's currently on Montego Classic Puppy Small Breed at 1 cup a day with half a sachet of dog meat gravy chunk things from woolies/pedigree, I'll be keeping up the sachets. Yes she's spoiled.

I'm wondering what dry pellets to switch her to, price isn't really an object as one bag lasts ages as long as it's not ridiculously priced because it's "organic" etc etc.

Only requirement is that it's easily sourced in Pretoria.

Eukanuba, Pedigree, Montego Karoo?? Any others??

Not a fan of Montego any more. I suspect something changed in the formulation and our dogs simply stopped eating it about six months ago. We tried a whole lot of brands to get them eating again, and eventually settled on UltraDog as it's the only one they clean the bowl with.

Wuma is very good, my dogs normally also clean the bowl with Wuma.

They have a similar product to the Montego Karoo which is Wuma Plus, they use Kangaroo meat which is very high in protein.

She's basically on Montego because that what she had at the breeder, I'm switching her anyway so may as well switch to the "best". Personally I have no idea the differences between the types, why I'm asking.

Hills seems to have the best ingredients, any idea how much it costs and where I can get it in Silverton/PTA East? Ultra-dog is a close second, Wuma uses animal derivatives with only a tiny amount of guaranteed meat so not keen on that.

On the best ingredients - Acana seems to be the new go to. Except that you'll spend more than your family grocery bill on it...

Hahaha that's exactly the "ridiculously priced because it's "organic" etc etc" I was referring to! Just couldn't remember the name, pricing on that is a tad ridiculous, unless I'm eating rib-eye marinated in the tears of virgins every night she ain't getting that

I am a big fan of Eukanuba. It's not cheap, but also not crazy expensive. It's very readily available at every pet store and at the vets - and you can buy it online as well from Yuppipet.

I buy the 15kg and it feeds both my dogs (small dogs) for 2 months. Works out to about R200 per dog per month, and the way I see it, R200 is what I spend on just one meal for myself when I'm eating out. So I don't feel it's too expensive for them.

Also, it's much higher quality food than what I tend to feed myself!

It's certainly not the best out there but Acana at nearly R150/kg is pushing it and Hills seems to be expensive just because it's Hills.

I don't know what your dog weighs, but mine are 6kg and 9kg and they go through a 15kg bag in 2 months. So the same bag should last you about 4 months, depending. (Although maybe start with a small bag in case you or your dog decide it's not right for whatever reason).

I used to use the breed-specific food, but I found it to be hassle. Firstly because my dogs aren't the same breed, and secondly because I couldn't get a 15kg bag.

My one dog had quite a bad skin condition when I adopted her that took months of work and tons of money to clear up. We have to be very careful with what we feed her to prevent it from returning, and Eukanuba has been a real winner in this regard. I'm very happy with it.

Also, you score a free back after every 9 purchases and get gifts and stuff every now and then from them.

You sure? I buy Hills and last time I checked Eukanuba was mire expensive. I buy the small breed version and I don't know which version of Eukanuba I compared with. I buy at the Pierre van Ryneveld vet, which I think falls under Centurion, but its not far off.

Original Montego used to have ostrich.

They Introduced Karroo (Ostrich) and the Classic is now made with Fishmeal.


Currently have my pup on Lionels Choice. Very well priced.

20% Protein (Ostrich/Poultry) and the same range of Carbs +/-50% as Montego.

I could not stand the fish breath anymore.

OP - Just buy a full sheep and mince it at the butcher. Get a few 10Kg bags of Montego Classic/Karoo as well.

Dogs need raw meat in their diet since that's their natural food.
