This morning a gentleman from Cell-C came to collect my wife's Huawei U8800H and delivered a brand new Motorola MB525.

I charged up the battery and then did the 2.2 upgrade as directed here and then set the APNs up as per the instructions here.

The WiFi connection worked without any hassles. I also noticed the Motorola has a '2G Only' mode as well as a '3G Only' mode. The Huawei only has a '2G Only' mode. So there are two of the problems we had with the Huawei already solved. :D Thank you Armando for arranging this!

Whoooo!

Yesterday at 5PM (as I was leaving work)

A gentleman from Cell-C came and swapped my and my wife's Huawei U8800H phones for the Motorola MB525/Defy.
I have updated the phones to 2.2 and configured the APN's (btw if you reset the APN's to default it automatically fills in all the information)

So far these phones are at least 1000000% better than the previous phones. Thank you Cell C rep for organising this!

We tried forcing the phone to 3G Only and then to 2G Only to test the voice quality. It is excellent for both parties on both 3G and 2G.

Yet another reason to get the Motorola MB525; you can't do this with the Huawei U8800H:

U880H quality problems calling other cells

I also took the U8800H on the RBM 200 contract. For me it works very well for everything except making calls. I love the HSPA+ and was downloading to my mac at ~8 Mbps through tethering this morning - I don't want to lose this by swapping over to the Motorola.

But voice calls are causing me grief. I haven't had a problem calling the voicemail service or calling Telkom landlines but when I call cellphones on Vodacom or MTN I sometimes get appalling quality. It seems that when calling Vodacom the other party's voice will fade randomly in and out of audibility and when calling MTN it sounds like someone is playing a recording of helicopter through a distortion filter on top of our conversation.

Hi Cell_C

I'm having big problems with my Huawei phone. The phone is not usable. I did explain in this tread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-to-Lars-and-CELLC-RBM-HD-Huawei-U8800H/page2 what problems i do have and you promise some help, but unfortunately nothing really happened. For the past two months i've been dealing with a gentlemen by name Armando, who i believe tries his best but again i could not get the phone to be replaced. The phone does not work and is barely usable. I would like to have a replacement. If this is not possible please let me know, that i can go and cancel the contract on the weekend. I don't want Motorola, that is what i've been offered as replacement. As i did explain to Armando as well if i wanted Motorola i would get Motorola in the first place. If you think guys, that you can not make Huawei to work on your network please say so, that i can cancel my contract.

Did send you a PM as well.

Hi bavmorda

Cell_C is the kind gentleman Armando. :)

If Cell C has offered you a Motorola MB525 you won't regret it. I was also bitten in the past by crappy motorola phones, but I really like my MB525. The only issue I had is the ear speaker seems to give problems.

Ha-ha, that is funny. Firstly i don't like the brand, and secondly i don't like the phone. But thanks for the advice.

The only reason someone wouldnt like the MB525 is because they haven't used one. But I still wouldnt recommend one because they are not shock resistant or very tough as advertised. The screen can crack very easily and Motorola SA can not repair them.

Mine fell off my lap from about 50cm high onto a tiled floor and that was the end of the screen.

Did it occur to you, that i don't like how the phone looks like. Which got nothing to do with functionality of the phone and using it.

So if functionality is not the issue, then why not stick with the Huawei?

What i'm trying to say is that i don't care what is the functionality if i don't like the look of it. But i do care about the functionality if i'm happy with the look. There is a tiny difference, don't know if you realize? Got my new Huawei today after meeting Cell_C (Armando). Will see how it goes. Really hope to be better then old one.

Any difference in the firmware or hardware versions?

Sorry guys, been very busy last few days. Must say the phone behaves much better regarding battery. There are small glitches, like doesn't want to make a call from the first time and i had to call again, went once in to emergency mode only calls, but looks like is much better then the previous one. Again not sure if it is a cellphone itself or the network. But i believe it is still to early to say how it will go.
Kernel 2.6.32.9-perf, Baseband version 129005, Custom version is CUSTC190D001. Let us know Cell_C if there is a difference.
