I have mentioned this problem I have in other threads and I thought this issue deserves it's own thread.

Is anyone with a RedBull mobile phone having trouble connecting to the GPRS/EDGE/3G network when roaming on Vodacom?

My phone only connects when I am covered by a Cell C tower, but when I get closer to home where there is no Cell C coverage and start roaming on Vodacom, my phone just displays a message "Data connection has been lost because you left your network". It's also not specific to any Vodacom tower as it can't connect from anywhere I have been connected to their network.

I have the Motorola MB525 which has a setting "Connect to Data while roaming" and it is switched on. I also tried the sim in 4 other phones and everyone has the same issue.

I have pm'd Cell_C who replied that he had made changes and I must switch off my phone and on again, but it had no effect.

Also had a call from Nell at Cell C who responded to a Hellopeter complaint and he also told me a Tech person will contact me.

I am very happy with the RedBull deal and pricing, but having a smartphone that you can't use on the internet is pretty useless. Luckily I have wi-fi at home that I use but it does not help much during the day.

It will be really great if someone with a Redbul sim card under cell c coverage just manually select Vodacom as the Network operator to see if they have the same problem.

You do need to remember that unless you are connecting to a dedicated Cell C tower, you will not get 3G from a Vodacom tower on which Cell C is piggybacking. That's apparently part of the 'roaming' deal Cell C has with Vodacom: EDGE or GPRS only, depending on the Vodacom tower's sub-3G capability.

My vodacom tower is EDGE only. And I know vodacom does not allow 3G roaming. But I get nothing. nada.

@Bravo Fox: We'll look into this and will revert to you and to this thread. Thanks for pointing this out.

Does your device have a setting for connecting to 3G only ?
I am just taking a stab at this but that could be a reason for your phone not roaming on vodacom's data network, it might be set to connect only on 3G and vodacom will only allow edge roaming and not 3G.

Not sure but you could see if that helps.

Yes. I have set it to "2g only". Same result.
Got a call from the tech department. Ashmal logged a fault with the networking guys.

update: After six calls from Marvin at the tech desk, they realized that there is a general problem with redbull not being able to roam on the vodacom network. After four more calls from umfli (sorry if spelt wrong) they got a new APN up for redbull to connect and roam on vodacom!! My deepest thanks to them for their persistance to get this sorted.

I would like to give it to you now, but I'll just clear it with the networking guy tomorrow if the apn will be a permanent one everyone can use. At the moment it does not seem to deplete the data bundle... EDIT: My mistake, it DOES use the bundle

Will post it here as soon as I have an answer...

how fast is the roaming connection?

Not very fast at all, but then again, the vodacom connection on this tower is not that fast to begin with. I'll try putting the sim in a usb dongle and do some speedtests.

just wondering if it is usable on the phone's browser...

Today between about 8-12 it was unusable. But now it is much better. Seems to have been a Cell C dns issue.

Anyway, I have spoken to Umphli, he said that the apn he gave me is THE one for Redbull mobile subscribers.

You can use all the same settings your phone has for cell c, but only change the APN from "internet" to "mobile.redbullmobile.co.za" No quotes, obviously.

:D

Thank you BravoFox... I've had the Motorola handset now for 2 weeks and have sent numerous messages to Cell C about the connectivity while roaming on Vodacom problem. The APN info you posted did the trick.

Any idea how to get the Red Bull Mobile Portal App onto the Motorola?
