"First released in 2011, Windows XP was one of Microsoft’s most popular operating systems, reaching 75% of its overall customer base by the time overall mainstream support for the OS reached end-of-life in April 2009."

But thanks Jan, for a moment there I didn't feel so damn old.
This actually looks pretty nice....

You could do a gazillion XP activations on a key, right? No online checking, do I remember correctly?

Windows 10 keeps telling mwah can upgrade to 11. Keep clicking no. Nice to know my hardware can support it. Not yet Bill.

I found a cd in the garage with this same key written on it, but it was too scratched for the drive to read. Now I know what’s on it!

Is there a story to why everyone had this key?
It's the one that Microsoft officially released to flood the industry with their operating system...

AFAIK Dell leaked the key and the rest they say is history.

Fok, I used that very same cd key back in the day. I still remember it as well. I haven't used windows for personal use in a very long time. But Windows XP - Pro was pretty great.

Not quite, no.

There were activation check killer apps, but every time you did an update, they'd sneak activation checkers in, which would be noted on various forums to avoid.

With XP up to service pack 2, they'd lock you out of your PC 3 days after they bust you. For legal reasons, once SP3 was released you would just get a watermark and your wallpaper disabled.

"This copy of Windows is not genuine", and a blank desktop. Nothing else, so I just carried on using it.
