Still no reason to upgrade from the Redmi 7 I bought a year and a half ago for R2199.

The Redmi 8 was actually a slight downgrade and the 9S is almost double the price.

The 9A is also a slight downgrade from the Redmi 7 and has no fingerprint sensor, so no thanks.

The only worthwhile option for me would be one of the Note 9 variants.

I bought a redmi 8 for R2600 last year unlocked it and installed an android treble ROM. Been really happy with it so far. My biggest issue with xoaimi at the moment spamming new phones constantly is the poor ROM support.

Called Telkom and Vodacom, they don't know about this.

The operators need to on board more brands

Preferably not. Part of the reason these phones are so affordable is that they aren't pushed by our operators.

So where do you buy a Xiaomi phone from a brick and mortar store in South Africa?

Redmi should really start working on their naming convention. 9A, 9C and then there are 3 million versions of the 9S.

Poco X3 is where all the attention is at at the moment. Both mine and my wife's Note 5 Plus's are now having battery issues. I imported both on launch in 2018. :(

Also @Hanno Labuschagne the subject of the article is technically wrong. Redmi is now a separate brand from Xiaomi.

To confuse things even more Xiaomi has 3 brands: Mi, Poco and Redmi. These are now independent companies with Xiaomi as the parent company. Redmi is focusing on the budget sector so mostly feature MediaTek chipsets.

Have some weird bug where the screen just freezes and you need to switch it off and on again to get it to work.
My Note 5 Plus does the same. I then have to lock and unlock it for the screen to start responding again. This only started about a month or so ago. It's about 30 months old and I was planning on upgrading next month anyway. Now with the borders open, I'm waiting for Gearbest to start shipping to SA again so I can get the Poco X3

I dont really know which is the best to be honest. Im running an unofficial GSI ROM based on the /e/ OS but thats not the best choice for most users. You would probably have to try a few of the GSI roms to find one you like and everything works. That's why I made the comment about the poor ROM support for these devices.

Okay thanks. I don't much about much about this stuff so it's going trial an error

I take it you haven't actually used a device with those specs, just the 1GB of yours. There is a huge jump going from 1 to 2GB, I did so with my LG L9 -> K10 (2017).
This. My tablet has 2gb and it's absolutely fine.

Your assumption is wrong.
I've had phones with great specs. I'm not 12.
2GB is not enough for any responsive actions on a Smartphone. Not today. Not anymore.
Depends on which Tablet as well.
Your 'fine' could he another's 'not fine'.
