Hi

I am considering buying a property but my only concern is the swimming pool is massive and I would like to get it reduced otherwise solar heating and maintenance is going to be a killer. Is it possible to reduce a pool and what costs am I looking at to reduce it to 6x3. See pic attached of what it currently looks like.all advice will be highly appreciated thanks

probably ~100k. As a note pool maintenance and running costs only vary so much going from a large pool to a medium pool, you could install solar to run the pump and install a salt chlorinator for probably less than half the cost of resizing it. the costs involved imo don't justify it, the pool also looks to be in good condition still.

The pools shape and location is a bit odd, at very least you will get a lot of rain run off from the roof into the pool at least.

Also found the shape and location a bit odd but it’s a beautiful house. Also how on earth do you cover such an odd shape. I was thinking to square it off and take it a bit away from the steps. But gosh R100k prob not worth it.

The cost of reducing will be the same as building a new one.

Leave it be and look for solar heating options. Will be cheaper and maintenance will be same as a reduced pool.

Or, close up and put in a braai area that you're actually going to use.

I would keep the right hand rectangular portion of I were to make it smaller.

Imo if you like the house otherwise and it ticks the boxes go for it, then live with the pool for a while see how you feel about it. Hire a pool service if you really want it hassle free, it is usually like R500p/m which is pocket change in comparison to making it smaller.

With a good working pump and filter, keeping it balanced and the odd step brushing a pool is 10 minutes of maintenance twice a week.

For the costs of making it smaller, I would rather look at keeping the pool and going solar. Buy covers to limit evaporation in summer. Convert to salt.

Keep it, also why do you want solar heating? If you're going to go for that look at a solar pump solution, they're normally 15 to 25k.

or keep your normal pump and put in a solar solution and let it be multi functional

How about an electronic cover for this pool? Is that going to be difficult because of the shape? And will I not need one for the heating aspect of it.

Is it possible to get an electronic cover? Or not because of the weird shape?
