TLDR Son's school is treating teachers poorly, questions posed at the bottom of the essay
I have searched (consulted the google) but I might be looking in the wrong places, so I want to ask anyone here with knowledge on labor law. One of the teachers at my son's preschool ECD, private, can't currently be at school. She has a medical certificate, for her asthma and other respiratory issues. She carries an inhaler and gets asthma attacks often. The school first verbally told her, that her job was secure and that she will be paid, they would find work for her to do. To date, they have no supplied her with work to do from home, or at school, were she could work isolated (ie office work or similar) Yesterday, they sent her a WhatsApp and said she will not be paid the end of the month.
She has been working there for 4 years, and I helped her look for her UIF stuff. She also doesn't seem to be registered for UIF, even though she pays UIF monthly. The school received TERS, but only some of the teachers received a portion of the money, she has only received a portion of her salary since April, monthly. Everyone agreed to take 50% reduction, but that UIF would cover the rest. This has not happened for the most part. The bookkeeper and principle reprimanded and threatened all the teachers, in a staff meeting three weeks ago, because one of the other teachers when to UIF to the inquiry, anonymously, about the TERS payout. UIF seems to be investigating the issue, but no news yet. The bookkeeper said that if it was up to her, she would fire that person on the spot if she knew who it was. Both the bookkeeper and the principle say they don't know how the UIF works, and neither could give any of the teachers an explanation of how the payouts would work, and how the salary break downs would be.
Everything about this sounds fishy. I don't like people getting screwed over. Esp because we have been threatened to pay our school fees, I expected the teachers to be paid. This lady is not a "spring chicken" and it pisses me off to think that she's been treated poorly.
I have removed my son from this school. I refuse to support an institution that, if not illegal, is being so unethical.
Questions.
1. Can the school refuse to pay her, even though verbally they said they world
2. She is not registered for UIF, is that legal?
3. May the school threaten staff for going to the UIF or labor?
