Hi everyone

is one allowed to install a gas tank (2 tanks) against a neighbours wall?

My parents are old and the next door neighbours have installed their gas tank on my parents wall. These guys have ample property space to do it against their own building wall.

So the gas pipes etc have been chased into our wall and the cage has been drilled onto the wall. On the other side of said wall is my parents living room.

my parents bought the house 40 years ago and converted the then garage into a living space. So I am sure that the wall on our property line but it is on the boundary.

Who do I contact regarding this? Building inspector for the area doesn't seem to care as I have sent pictures and no answer was received and this was a month ago.

Are they not supposed to ask for permission to drill into our wall?

Unsure that the exact regulations are, but for interest's sake. The conversion from garage to a living room, is that on plan? Because the inspection from the council might bite someone in the bum.

Also the living room wall is it an open space like a yard or a courtyard on your neighbour's side?

yes it is 100% on plan and approved. Building inspector etc came to check on it that time. Everything is by the book.

Unsure if this is 100% Correct.

See image attached. Also that little room at the back on their property where the red line is, it was never touching our wall because the old garage window was there and my parents didnt sign any plans over the years. These neighbours only bought the house in 2014 and the prior neighbours didnt renovate.

New neighbours are well off so they think they can do whatever they please

If the wall is a double brick wall they can place the cylinders there

how can one tell if it is a firewall?

But the wall is ours so are they allowed to drill into it?

Not sure how helpful this is for you but here is an article I found

I suspect that you're going to have to consult a lawyer.

Edit: btw, outside of the principle of the thing, what is your concern?

It's a boundary wall so it's shared, even if you paid for the wall.
If that wall was the garage's wall when build, then I am pretty sure that wall is on their property and if so then they can't drill into that wall. However, the cheapest way would be to look at the property on the local GIS website for an indication who owns the wall. Otherwise, surveyor will have to be called to make sure.

besides who owns what wall where, if the wall foundation and the wall are in your property then the neighbour can ask you to come to "his side" and take care of the wall as it is yours... yes you cannot just build a wall and leave the inside nice and the outside kak as per the law, it has to actually look decent. So don't go that route...

anyway... forget about that wall because it's most likely a shared wall built on the boundary line like everyone does.

  • pop into a gas company, they're all over the place and discuss with them the dilemma, they should know the law. And remember a boundary wall is not a firewall. A Firewall has to be able to pass all the relevant tests, you should see what happens to concrete / bricks when you heat them. And then what about the height of the wall? fire from your parents side can go over a little wall... I would say this is illegal, electrical points / drains / walls etc. How did that person who installed that gas know there wasn't a drain or electrical point on your parents side?
