Regulator rejects Russian Covid-19 vaccine for South Africa

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) has not approved the Russian-developed Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine for use in South Africa, citing safety concerns due to the country's HIV rate.

Interesting move. I was on the fence with Sputnik since the Russian's are not stupid, and they also wouldn't release a vaccine on their people that wasn't safe.

But I guess if it has an added risk for HIV patients its another story.

I would like to them to focus on Moderna getting approval here now, we could use a few more options especially with boosters coming soon.

If I remember correctly, Moderna just isn't interested in supplying Africa and hence they requested approval ie. SAHPRA doesn't have the required documentation to assess.
