Right, so here's my dilemma. I have tasks running on my personal computer at home, which is connected to the internet. These tasks need to be monitored, changed, stopped, started etc etc. I need to be able to connect, securely, to my personal computer from work.

What software is there to do this, preferably free, but Im willing to pay(if i reaaaallllyy have to), but not subcription. I prefer once off payments....

There's teamviewer
There's ultraVNC - I ultravnc
You need to open up the port on your router.

www.portforward.com will have everything you need incl. tutorials.

Do you have a static ip? otherwise you are gonna need to setup a DDNS account so you can get to your home network.
u can use the above applications or just use windows RDP, its encrypted.

Remember to setup dyndns on your pc as well in case ip address changes from time to time.

www.dyndns.org - create account and install dyndns updater app

Teamviewer is the easiest and is very user friendly. You also won't need DynDNS or port fowarding when using Teamviewer. Get it for free at www.teamviewer.com and choose "Personal" when installing. It will give you a unique ID number in a blue box with a password beneath that. Just enter those details into teamviewer on your work pc and you would be able to connect. Remember that Teamviewer needs to be installed on both machines and must be running.

What are the bandwidth requirements to see and control a desktop? How many kbps? With what we need to control going on, there usually isn't much going spare... :p

Here is how I do it:
-Install dydns updater like Hemps said- create a free account like on them like: Sparkz0629@example.com (you should be able to ping your machine if firewall permits it/ you might need to configure port forwarding on your router) You need this because chances are that you are not getting a static ip from your isp.

-Enable remote desktop on your pc and give your user account access (make sure you have a strong password for your user account). Configure the local firewall to allow RDP.
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Using-Remote-Desktop-Windows-XP-Pro.html

-then at work go > start> run > mstsc -put in computer= Sparkz0629@example.com > then go to >options> experience change it to modem. and hit connect.

RDP uses port 3389 in case you need to setup port-forwarding on your router. (forward 3389 to your machine name/ip)
You can use other programs instead of RDP, such as vnc etc.

PS: I think programs like Team Viewer and LogMeIn Hamachi are slower because they are a middle man.

Using any of these apps will "open up" your pc in some way. Apart from the normal security on your pc, you also have to enter a password with TeamViewer when you connect.

Bandwidth won't be a problem, I can easily work on my home pc (adsl) when I connect from my laptop, even on GPRS.

No need to setup dynamic dns or forwarding ports or anything like that.

Better and more user friendly how?

For starters, you don't need to use that security-pass code thing to connect to PCs the first time, the web-experience is also alot better . You also get the ability to create a virtual network between the PCs (LogMeIn Hamachi) , which implies you can use normal windows remote desktop or windows shared folders to connect to said PC if you don't wish to use the remote connect tools they provide in the browser.

Now i know Teamviewer got certain things of it too, but it wasn't as easy to set up as LogmeIn. Not saying TeamViewer can't do the job or is bad, just i had more luck with LogMeIn :)

Hamachi is not the fastest application when it comes to remote logins and makes your computer available on the internet. I would also not recommend that you fiddle with your firewall as this could potentialy be exploited. As I've mentioned ealier, Team Viewer is the fastest and in my opinion the safest way to connect remotely to a machine. Team Viewer is also updated regularly. You have the ability to specify a password (which only you would know) or the system can assign a password after each remote session. Visit their website at www.teamviewer.com. It is easy to setup as it is just a matter of downloading and installing. The file size is about 3 to 4Mb.

No, local cap is not going to work with Team Viewer as the Team Viewer server provides a unique ID.

I found teamviewer to take longer to connect than ultravnc, with ultravnc on both machines , shortcut on desktop I can connect with one click.
Also teamviewer uses more bandwidth than ultravnc - if i connect vie teamviewer my downloads start to drop to 20% BUT with ultravnc they stay at around 90%+
