Hi there,
I've searched every where. Just wanted to find out if anyone has setup remote desktop through a 3g router. I have a pc at home which is using a 3g Huawei E220 HSPDA Modem. I have the dyndns account client setup and the port open on my firewall but I still cannot connect to my pc. Is there a problem with the ip address. If anyone has done this before I would really appreciate your help.

Much appreciated.

Is the PC you're connecting to connected via 3G? If so you'll probably need to use the unrestricted APN.

Sorry I thought this was on the Vodacom forum, not sure if MTN have an unrestricted APN, you'll have to check. Otherwise if you're on contract ask them to provision you for the VPN APN, might help too.

It worked for me...

I managed sites in Alberton, Mulbarton, Boksburg, Germiston... All through my Vodacom 3G connection, without preconfiguring anything. If I'm not mistaken, it should technically just work from the "connectror's" side.

The remote computer should have the RDP port open on its local firewall, and the remote internet connection firewall (example: Netgear Router) should have the RDP port open allowing traffic inbound. If this is in place, the connector's 3G will connect.

If the remote computer also uses 3G, THEN a unrestrickted APN WILL BE REQUIRED... Connecting FROM a 3G station is no problem, MTN of Vodacom, but connecting TO a 3G connection may be an issue...

Also make sure the Windows firewall has the RDP port open. By default it is closed.

Ja... If all of this is i place, you should be set and working in now time...

Use something like dyndns or no-ip to "ease" the trouble of the dynamically changing ip on the remote side...

firstly thanks for replying.

Rephrase : I need to connect to a pc which has a 3g connection. I've already setup dyndns and no-ip. I open my ports on the pc which is 3389. I get to IP addresses when I connect a server and client. I tried both but still can't connect. How do i set a unrestrickted APN. Do i call them cause the guys in the technical side don't know whats going on. they are just transferring my call. Tell me agent5 are you connecting to a pc which has 3g connection. How did you set it up. the hspda i'm using is HUAWEI - e220
really appreciate your help.

@toba: Try calling 1555 and ask them to provision you for the VPN APN.

You cannot connect to a pc on a 3G connection directly because MTN assign private IP addresses to 3G clients, not public addresses. MTN use the 172.x.x.x IP address range which is a private IP range so if you are connecting from a public IP address you will not be able to connect to your machine directly.

That said, your machine does have a public IP address but neither your PC nor your router will know what that address is. Your router is probably sending the private 172.x.x.x to dyndns.

Your options are:
1) pay for a VPN APN from MTN to connect your two PC's together.
2) Install the free Hamachi VPN client on both PC's (www.hamachi.cc), Hamachi can create a VPN connection between two PC's even if both are behind firewalls and have private IP addresses.

On the PC that is connected to the net, do the following.

Go to your network connections, right click on the Connection used to connect. Select properties, select advanced, Select internet conection sharing.

Then just do the settings :p easy as pie !

assuming your using a Ethernet cable

If you use the MTNVPN APN you will find that the remote desktop port (3389) is open.

MTNVPN will allocate a live internet address which you can use with dyndns, only port 3389 is open though...

Also only contract holders have access to MTNVPN.
