I feared so. How does that work though, can I root it but keep it with the same Sony Ericsson ROM? Because I quite like it to be honest...

Yep you can just hop on over to XDA to get the how-to

Rooting is just like getting the Administrator account for your Windows PC. What you do after that is up to you.

So in your case you want to change the start-up animation so you need to replace the old one so check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397606

Great, thanks, I suppose it's worth doing then.

One quick question, since I'm still a bit clueless when it comes to Android: if I root my phone, will I still be able to use the SE update software etc? i.e. It doesn't change how anything will view the phone, it's just getting root priveleges?

If you root, you can always unroot, which in this case is something I would HIGHLY recommend once done and always a good idea before you even check for updates.

One last thing! Would you recommend also taking off some of the pre-loaded apps that I definitely won't be using (not ones like GMail etc that might be needed for something) but other random stuff like a step counter and fitness monitor? It's not going to interfere with anything else?

Well that is entering dangerous territory. You are very likely to break things beyond repair. That's normally what the mods/developers do over at XDA when they release custom ROMs to flash. They know a hell of a lot more then the average user and still manage to break things, so for someone like you I would say stay away from that area.

PS: I am not saying you are stupid or anything its just based on the questions you ask I see you as someone that is not interested in learning how the OS works, and more just want it to do something specific and nothing more.

If you like me, nothing wrong with jumping in head 1st and see what breaks 1st, your mind or the phone, then I would say go ahead and have fun. :)

Let me how you fare with that App Remover. And in the meantime, I have another quick question: should I give myself root privileges, then install an app like DroidWall and give it root privileges, and then remove my own root privileges?

Well to be honest its doesnt exactly work like that... well it could but it will be more complicated than a simple click here and click there.

If you want to use droidwall best is to just root your phone and leave it as such.... just remember to unroot(Return to stock) before you update in future.

Well I'm rooted and got DroidWall installed, as well as live logcat (replaces the startup videos with the Android debugging text, makes it much quicker). Loving the new control!

Any luck with that SystemApp Remover?

Havent tried it yet... Sorting stuff out @ work... will check and give feedback by the time you wake up ;)

As promised here is the update(Tested on a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play):

Well it works as mentioned ie: allows you to remove System apps. The assistant(Color coding) was not on by default once in the System Apps section just press {Menu} {Assist is OFF} to turn it on.

I did find that the colors is not 100 accurate as it gave me a green light on applications I knew would break my phone like for example I could remove my dialer???

I removed BBC Player and Digital Clock, oh and Youtube just to check and they where gone like in permanently so I would HIGHLY recommend you back up your phone before running this as it allows you to remove any app including the default launcher. (VERY Dangerous)

In Fact skip this app totally as the only benefit(Color coded threat levels) to Titanium is null and void

Just use Titanium Backup as it allows you to back up the apps before you remove them.
