Renault Captur vs Duster

My mum had been looking to buy a Duster since last year. She's looking to get an SUV and at the price point it seemed like the best deal. With the Captur now in SA, it isn't as clear anymore. The Captur is slightly smaller, and I do worry about the boot space. The Duster is better off-road, but she'll never use it, she didn't want the 4x4 model anyway. How much nicer is the Captur?

Are there are any Duster owners on here, have you noticed any irritations? We have a Nissan NP 200, which is Dacia designed like the Duster, and it has a few issues, the wipers are on backwards, there are some squeaks and rattles, and the fuel tank is opened from a lever on the passenger side.

My mum's main worry about the Captur is the engine size. She feels that a 900cc can't be right. This was the same reason that she didn't like the Ford Ecosport.

She was looking at the Duster Expression, which costs R213 990, the Captur Expression costs R219 900, a negligible difference.

She currently drives a 2007 Hyundai Elantra 1.6.

Go for the Captur.... The build quality of the Duster was not up to scratch IMO. The door handle was quite sharp

If you value look and feel and material quality AT ALL, give the Duster a wide berth.

Every time I open a Duster's door, this is my reaction:

Thanks guys, my mum really liked the Captur, and it would probably have been the better buy. She hated the 2 tine roof, and wasn't pleased with the 900cc engine in the base model, but the better equipment swayed her.

The deal doesn't look like it will happen though. She wanted to trade in the Hyundai, which is actually a 2008 model, 1.6 gls. 103 000km on the clock, 15 000 to 90 000km services all done at the dealer, and the car still looks in good shape. They only offered her R40 000, so she walked away. I know that dealers have expenses, but that's half of what they go for on autotrader.

My 2c:

My old man bought his Duster 1.6 Dynamique out of the box late 2013 & paid R195k; now the low spec Expression goes for R214k..sad panda..that model is a bit crappy imo; no infotainment system & alloys iirc.

He rather loves his & does the odd long distance driving & he has had zero complains.

Anyway so yeah the choice for you/your mum on Duster vs Captur is all down you your usage & what you want out of the crossover.

Duster:

- Slightly bigger with relativity big boot
- Clearly old tech design & engine
- Not nearly as refinded
- Can do some off-roading actually/harsh terrain actually
- A blocky face only a mother could love

Captur:

- Way more modern; based on Clio 4
- 0.9 turbo engine has pros gone
- Smaller in size & space relative to the Duster
- The best "off-roading" you hope for is climbing a low curb at a mall
- A super rounded face that looks attractive from golf course to church

Both vehicles have the same 7" LG-developed infotainment screen that incl TomTom

If your Mum is keen on the Duster i would personally get a neat low-milage higher spec model; as the car has been out here for close to 2yrs there are a number of good 2nd hand buys on the market.

She doesn't care for the touch screen, I can barely get her to use her phone properly. The steel wheels did seem really crappy on the base Duster. Maybe a 2nd one will need to be the way to go. She's unlikely buy from the dealer now.

If you're unhappy with the trade-in they're offering you on a Hyundai, you really shouldn't be buying a Renault.

But to be fair, that's a terrible offer. I got offered that for a 2007 Megane 1.9 DCI Sedan with 150000km. The least popular Megane at its time

Does it have to be a new car? You can get a 2012/13 Honda CR-V for R220k

An update, my dad took the Hyundai in for its 105 000km service, and asked them to do a trade in valuation. If traded in for an ix35, Hyundai will give him R75 000 for the car. The ix35 is more expensive than the Duster or Captur, but getting almost double for the trade in seems amazing.

Duster = Dacia, just by the way.

IMHO stay away from the frenchies.

I know that it is designed by Dacia, but so is the Nissan NP200. We've had one of those for about 3 years and it has been invaluable to us.

Close-minded thinking right there...just saying

My old man Duster is close two yrs & he does monthly across the border trips & no issues to report.

When the initial price came out it was a steal...no it's "good value" still.

Some trim is flimsy; no arguments but it's a solid drive & boot is huge.

Another update: Renault eventually upped their offer to R70 000. We had to take the Dynamique model, but still, R30 000 more on the trade in is amazing. They didn't have the right colour in stock though, so we will only pick it up on Friday. I didn't realise that it was so hard to get a new Duster in SA.
