I really do not get the anti-French car thing and always wonder how many of these people actually ever owned one, or are the opinions based on hearsay and prejudice? Maybe time for a poll......?

yeah its a predictable response and outright boring already.

Fun fact. The 2020 Fortuner's first service is R1500 cheaper than that of the Renault Kwid. And the auto gearbox replacement of a Citroen C3 was quoted to me at R75,000. R10,000 more than what the car has been valuated for. You hear the stories or you learn from them the hard way. Never again. Never. Sell it on gumtree and buy a Toyota instead.

French cars are quite nice and good, the service and parts prices not so much

Ask a mechanic who has worked on french cars.
Ask him what he drives.
Guaranteed he won't say "Renault", "Peugot" or "Citroen".

Renault is mostly built from Nissan parts. Which makes them cheaper to run and service. And waaay more reliable than not just other French brands, but anything that isn't Japanese.

Anyone classing Renault specifically under traditional French stereotypes is retarded. Mostly just idiots harping on the same old tune with no understanding of the fundamental changes they've undergone...

I'm old.
And French cars are still French.
Let me die with my prejudices please?

I disagree here, in fact it’s the other way around. Nissan uses a lot of Renault motors (1.2Tand 1.3T, whatever Motor the Magnaite/Kiger uses, 1.5l diesel, 1.6l diesel, 2l Diesel and the 2.3l Diesel). Parts and Servicing is also more expensive than with Nissan.

And we were quoted R130k for a auto box for a car valued at R155k, on my old Renault Captur. Sold it and got into a Duster. Amazing platform. Brilliant engine. Same crappy Double Clutch that will **** the bed eventually. Previous car was a Clio 1.2T, same engine and gearbox combo as the Captur and at Year 4 the engine needed replacing, which Renault did without hassle. But I flogged it and bought a Captur.

Renault makes amazing cars, but as soon as the car has 1 year of warranty left you flog it.

Once the Duster is up, I’m looking at the new Captur.

My girlfriend has a Megane. I disapprove of any car that has the indicator and wiper stalks on the wrong sides like Renaults.

Correct. The Renault Sport Megane/Clio have Nissan engines and there aren’t that many complaints about them on the forums. I’ve heard rumours that they build the RS models to a higher standard.

Yes, I have the Nismo 1.6T engine. 5 yrs. the RS has never been to a workshop ever. in the same period:

1. Fiesta ST 2.L - gearbox and engine replaced under warranty
2. Polo Gti - R60k warranty repairs
3. Yaris Spirit - Starter Motor replaced year 3

Also I drive the k@k out of it. average of 10.5l/100km. other cars i never drove as hard. tracked it as well.

RS's are assembled by hand in Diepe, same as their F1 factory, alpines and RS01 (which is powered by a GTR engine).

Oh, my boet has a 1.6 Auto Megane thats going onto 20 yrs.

Had more than 6 Renaults over the years in the family and extended family - never had major problems, out of warranty repairs were priced fine. In fact sometimes cheaper than a friends Passat.
Biggest issue I ever had was putting 3rd party sound in one many moons ago and they stuffed up the electrics . Other than that the engines were bulletproof

Awesome! Another reason why I love the current RS models is because the Nissan engines use timing chains. No timing belt services here!

I’m glad to hear you haven’t fallen victim to the gearbox issues that the earlier RS Clio 220 models had, @nazmo

yeah they sorted out quite a bit, oil cooler and software. The box is a getrag unit, pretty sure as used by vw, ford amongst others.
