Strange, if they cared that much they would have invented an ignition key with a built in breathalyser many years ago, but of course they don't want to upset the government...I mean people

Just like wearing masks it’s about reducing risk.

All those things are certainly factors, but we can mostly certainly and factually say a vast proportion of accidents and especially fatal ones will be dramatically reduced without the speed.

Would you rather have a drunk driver going 180 or 250? Which do you think as a better odds of ending badly.

Do you want people hitting a surprise bad road surface at 180 or 250? Which is more likely to go horribly wrong?

Do you prefer people overtaking badly at 180 or 250?

On their phones at 180 or 250?

This really isn’t hard.

Yes, let's invest a ton in a system that the car owner will be annoyed by and will attempt to bypass even if they don't drink.

Just look at the seat belt noise for it clipping it in, I know quite a few that turned it off as it annoyed them sometimes with e.g. groceries on seat or passenger taking off jacket etc.

The 180 limit doesn't really make sense, that third of fatalities involve speed is a weird argument, what is the speed and how does bringing that max speed to 180 help? Would guess it to be rare that a speed over 180 was the culprit or make a difference as usually its more a case of either being intoxicated, reckless (in terms of way over the speed for such a road, like someone doing 120 in a 60 zone), etc.

This is just Renault and Volvo marketing/appeasing government and insurance.

The Nissan I have do not need to be electrically limited. I doubt that it can do 160 km/h. Come to think about it, I doubt it can go faster than 140km/h

what about drunk drivers?
what about careless overtaking?
what about dangerous road conditions?
what about Distracted driving? mobiles and TV screens in the car?

seems to me this is done to just gain headlines and not actually make one little difference.
That's the other two thirds not mentioned in the article.

Renault SA has confirmed that ALL of their Kwid & Triber models presently on sale in SA already conform to this proposed standard - and challenge any owners to see if they can manage to exceed 180 km/h in them on our national highways...

At least one owner of a Kwid 'Climber' model has already failed spectacularly in their recent attempt to do so...
