Renters ... the scum of the earth ?

We sold our property and 2 deals fell through on our offers to purchase, which leaves us out of house in about 3 weeks time. We have to RENT. It has been quite an eye opener moving from buyer to renter. I'm talking about agents rolling out the red carpet on pvt viewings serving light snacks, to agents putting the phone down on you, to being down right rude.

We still haven't found a place so we would probably lease for about 6 months. So far the biggest challenge has been finding a place that accepts 2 big dogs.

So having never dealt with renters and being a first time renter myself, are renters the scum of the earth? Cos right now I sure feel like one.

Firstly I've never had pvt viewings or light snacks when viewing houses to purchase? I found that while looking for a place to rent or buy the agents were pretty much the same.

If people are putting the phone down on you I think there's more to the story that you're not sharing.

Yes, yes they usually are, most of them, for the most part.

In my experience personally I would never rent out any property I owned.

Houses are moving so fast that they not making it to show days anymore. We attended a pvt viewing by Chas Evertt that was 6pm mid week. There were 18 families that were on the list. And yes they did serve light snacks. The house was sold that Friday.

LOL. No there is not much else to add to this. Rude agents, while some couldn't be bothered.

When it comes to renting, money talks. If you want to get a decent place without too much hassle then you have to flash the cash. Otherwise you're going to be sitting in the queue with the rest of the plebs.

I hope not – we are renters :) I think our landlord has a sweet deal – we made improvements to the house (aircon, motorised garage door) to which they did not contribute any money, and we never miss rent. We are not good gardeners though ;)

BTW: We really struggled with agents, and could only make a deal with the owner directly.

Lots of renters are just too much trouble I agree. I will not go back to renting out my place again, people have no respect for property they don't own.

Sure. I'm just very reluctant and despondent that I will be paying somebody else's bond for the next 6 months. LOL I know its silly because we are just paying for a service, but it "feels" like I am just burning cash.

I was having a discussion with a mate and he also had to rent when he went through a divorce about 5 years ago. He told me that 3 months after he moved out the landlord called him up to tell him that he was the best tenant ever! And he was like WTF, all he did was pay his rent like you supposed to? Apparently the new tenants were there for 3 months and were already 2 months late!

I can't get my head around this tbh. You go to a shop, if you like something you pay for it. What's the big deal? Why wouldn't this be the same for renting?

Problem with being a renter is that you can be almost certain that you will not get your deposit back when you leave. There will always be a reason for the agent/owner to hold back your deposit. :(

EDIT: ...and years ago when I rented a place, I was supposed to move in on the 1st. When I got there, the previous tenant was still living there. The agent was standing on the front porch, asking me (with my trailer and bakkie full of my stuf) if I could move in tomorrow. So I said no, no chance. I ended up moving into a dump. Not painted, blinds damaged, mouldy ceilings and walls :( This became my problem when I moved out, because even though I took notes of this, they withheld my deposit, saying they needed to clean and paint the place, which was never done for me :(

We're renting. Getting a very nice deal on a place. We were exceptionally lucky. Also the landlords originally didn't include water in the rental price but then the council couldn't work out the situation so the landlord just couldn't be bothered to fight and waived it for us in writing. One of these days they're going to get a shocking bill but it isn't our issue. We pay every month faithfully. We haven't damaged anything. We've probably averted some underlying issues with the piping that would have caused major damage down the line. Within a couple of years we'll be ready to buy a place. I see nothing whatsoever wrong with renting when it's the best thing for your personal situation.

We have found the same, but we now insist that our deposit covers the last months' rent. This has worked well.

I did this and was thrown with some clause in my contract, so I moved out without notice and not paying the last month's rent. The agents bitched for a while, and threatened blacklisting, but eventually left me alone.

The estate agency my wife works for has a number of rentals they administer.
I have myself seen some wierd stuff. From tenants that decide to cut down all the trees on the property because its a chore to rake the leaves, to a tenant breaking the no-pets rule with a Horse(!)
Moving out when they are 3 months overdue and taking the entire kitchen with them - stove, cupboards, blumbing and light fittings.
Same with owners - really strange stuff - refusing to replace broken geysers, fix plumbing. One rented out a house - only to forget to tell anyone that the patio doors were WELDED shut because he did not have the keys for them.

That one was also a member of a fundamentalist church that only believed in the old testament, and had moved his entire family to a isolated farm in the Karoo to prepare for the end of times. He had only had cellphone coverage on one spot in on the farm, on a mountain, and would ride his horse there every wednesday afternoon between 2 and 3 to take phonecalls. :wtf:

Obviously that was the rental that gave the most issues.

I've never rented from anyone, but I've rented to before, and all I can say is it is true that people simply have zero respect for what does not belong to them.
Every 2 year's between tenants, half the house had to be fixed up in some way or other.
