Repairs begin to fix South Africa’s slow Internet

The ship that has been tasked with fixing South Africa’s slow Internet issues has reached its destination and has begun repairs on the broken submarine cable.

This was confirmed by TENET, which tweeted this morning that the Leon Thevenin had arrived at its destination.

It feels like the ship teleported for that last half of the journey. I'm pretty sure I checked on where it was a day or two ago and it was only 1/2 way there...

For those interested, the ship is named after this guy:

Lol, I thought Thévenin sounded very familiar,

Léon Charles Thévenin (French: [tev(ə)nɛ̃]; 30 March 1857, Meaux, Seine-et-Marne – 21 September 1926, Paris) was a French telegraph engineer who extended Ohm's law to the analysis of complex electrical circuits.

Forgot all about Thévenin's theorem :X3:

The AIS system that ships use to report GPS location is reliant on low bitrate ship-to-land communications using VHF receivers on the land to receive the signals.

Some ships are equipped with Satellite AIS, but it is rather rare.

Hence the ship might seem to "jump" as it goes in and out of AIS land-based receiver range.
