Senate Republicans have a new plan for preventing mass shootings: require public schools to use surveillance technology to monitor students’ online behavior for signs of violence or self-harm.

A new Republican bill that claims “to help prevent mass shootings” includes no new gun control measures. Instead, Republican lawmakers are supporting a huge, federally mandated boost to America’s growing school surveillance industry.

Surveillance, the tool of all dictatorships, fascist and authoritarian states everywhere. Coming to a town near you.
They taking lessons from the Chinese in Xinjiang,

One evening in the summer of 2017, local police in China made a surprise inspection of a small private language school, checking the visas of all non-Chinese attendees. Among those present was a foreign doctoral student, who had left his passport at his hotel. “Not to worry,” said the officer. “What’s your name?” The officer took out a handheld device and entered the student’s name. “Is this you?” Displayed on the screen was the researcher’s name, his passport number, and the address of his hotel.

China’s Surveillance State Has Tens of Millions of New Target

China's Surveillance State Should Scare Everyone

The country is perfecting a vast network of digital espionage as a means of social control—with implications for democracies worldwide.

THESE are the people -- coming to CAPE TOWN !

with cheaper surveillance comes more control
it can be used for both ends, good and bad,

al depends on the state, look in China that ISNT a democracy they round up dissidents and imprison people.
but the US with its democracy might be different, might use such powers more responsibly.

locally, could go either way.

I actually don't see the problem. Schools have always been mandated to be involved in their students business.

Ever heard of the famous Lord Acton quote ?

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men"

John Dalberg-Acton, 1st Baron Acton

or

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Juvenal Satires (Satire VI, lines 347–348)

Once politicians have and are able to access this kind of power it will ALWAYS be used for CONTROL !

Their kinks, fetishes, embarissing interestets etc are no ones business, especially not the states. I sure as **** don't want anyone to know I'm a closet Katy Perry fan (****, i didn't mean to say that allowed).

And then of course this is where it starts, and then in a few years when we're all comfortable with everything we see and do online being watched, some bright spark will come with a plan to put in some rating or scoring system based on those habits and idiots who think public surveillance has no negative impact on any law abiding citizen will jump at this because you know, no public social score system has any negative impact on any law abiding citizens.....

Think of China's social scoring system that wants or does let total strangers know there is someone in their immediate vacinity that is in debt and behind on payments.

Or you go for a job interview and that search you did on the hub for a frisky water polo teacher because of all the recent hub-hub flags you as a deliquient.

Instead of this, maybe just implement proper gun control?
I agree, arm teachers and put more armed security around, teach gun saftey and handling like they used to in shoot clubs and activities.

And more importantly deal with all the other social and physcological issues that create these twerts. And fine the crap out of media that plasters their faces and name accross every TV, phone, tablet, paper and screen across the country. Deamonise them, don't give them the fame and attention they want.

And seriously Lupus, please explain to me how more rules is going to stop someone who has no intention of following the existing rules.

Paranoid much? Kids are supposed to be surveiled. We're supposed to know what they're up to. Schools and by extension government have always had the mandate to keep an eye on them. So what's changed? Oh we now have the technology to know what they're up to all the time. Are you a Luddite?

BS...

How has any public surveillance had a negative impact on any law abiding citizen?

There are people in China, Russia, Hungary, East Germany, North Korea, Cambodia, Iran, Syria, Bahrain, Yemen, Libya, United Kingdom, USA, and Russia who would beg to differ with you.

Mass surveillance infringes your right to privacy, freedom of expression and a fair trial, should you even get one, seeing as how even in the US they can disappear you under the Patriot Act without recourse to legal representation let alone a trial.

Privacy has become non-existent anyway, thanks to social media.
Secondly there is no privacy once you leave your house anyway, so how will camera surveilance on the streets, impact a law abiding citizen?

Listing communist regime countries, means nothing and in the US and UK, CCTV helps curb crime and catch criminals.

Let's distinguish between facts and fiction...

This is about CCTV in schools and on the street, which helps preventing crime and catching criminals.
