yeah 15 years ago you had nowhere near the same traffic volumes.

Unfortunately it is not related to traffic volumes. Many roads in SA with low traffic volumes have potholes now. The pothole is an African disease.

Just a note - Tito wanted a 200 basis points cut but his decision was veto'd by the council.

Going OT but I had to reply to the pothole topic :
I've noticed that since the 1994 there seems to be very little road maintenance taking place.
The problem often isn't the increase of traffic - it's maintenance!

Example :
On the JHB side of the Allendale bridge over the N1 there is a LOT of sand sitting about half way into one lane on the Allendale road.
That sand has been there for over a year now and every time it rains the water dams up and the cars have to drive through it creating potholes.

The sand was there before they started the construction work in the area so it wasn't caused by the trucks going back and forth.

Why hasn't all the sand and debris been cleaned away?
I see they've patched the potholes but the sand is still there to create more.
Surely prevention is cheaper than cure?
