Ive just come back from Plaka in Umhlanga opposite gateway. greek style food. very upmarket place. top notch service.

As for the food... its pricey for what you get but it is delicious and of very good quality.

Another place i went to on friday..Bamboo Lounge in Umhlanga on the beach side. They have this special on at night where you pay R110 and get all you can eat sushi & 1 free drink. it sounds a bit steep but when you are sitting infront of a conveyor belt with piles of sushi rolling past your face you soon learn you are getting a very good deal. my boyfriend ate so much sushi he like rolled outa that joint im not lying.

Another very good eating restaurant i went to is Market, its on the corner of Marriot and Cowey roads. its like hidden away in this little courtyard between the big buildings. its very peaceful lovely atmosphere. it is pricey but the chow is just devine.

There is another secret place i just love going to. im not sure what its actually called but i just call it the antiques cafe. its in this lovely old colonial building not quite on but near the corner of Churchill and Windermere roads. it has a lovely outdoor courtyard, the decor and everything is very retro as there is a antique shop attached to the cafe. I always take my mom there when she is in durban she adores the place. the food is very reasonable farm style healthy stuff.

For probably the best setting, and some bloody good seafood in the uMhlanga area....

Razzmatazz inside the Cabana Beach hotel. Its on the front of the hotel and is basically on the beach. Awesome setting, and the prices are pretty reasonable for what you get.

Just for the thread Necro.. I'll add a new one..

Neo's, near Durbans Ice Rink.

Mozambique style food, and probably one of the better Seafood restuarants around.

Wodka Restaurant near uShaka is really really good. The place and the attached hotel/conference centre don't seem impressive, but I really enjoyed everything about the restaurant. The desserts especially are very inventive and appealing.

Their fish of the day is insanely awesome.

Ate there once a couple of years ago, will never ever go back.

Been meaning to try out the Havana Grill at Suncoast for a long time,Went & played a couple of hours of blackjack & wandered up there tonight with the better half.....Nothing really that would make me go back there again, pretty ordinary food for the prices.
Hussar Grill,up the back of Camps Bay in CT is still no1 for me,bit on the expensive side but bloody nice food & good atmosphere with a few oldies tunes (70's-80's) playing in the background.
With a bit of luck it was the casino that payed for the meal (just)so a free adventure....

Difference between going to Beira Alta and John Dory's down the road is a little more than the quality of food over in Balito

Aqua in Sibiya.

food is good (not the best in the world but better than average like a 4/5)
lighting is nice for a date
service is good
hotel on site (lol)
Saturday nights they have a live band playing
Sibiya garden provides a nice setting to go for a walk afterwards

Also perhaps plan it on a day there is a show in the theatre

I second this. I eat at plaka quite often simply amazing. Love the chicken souvlaki and the lamb shank.

Dont like their desserts though

I can really, really, recommend Harveys, which used to be in Innes Road and is now in Umhlanga.

Yeah. mo-zam in ballito is pretty damn good..

Stay away from the one in Hillcrest, its rubbish.

There are apparently a few new places in the Umhlanga Village which are pretty good from what I've heard.

Over and above that, if you want high end food, 9th Avenue Bistro... or if you want some of the best steak in Durban.. Joops place in the same centre.

That was a good call, tried them tonight
Mussel pot 10/10
Calamari 8/10 - Don't know if it was the quality or the cooking style but didn't match some top stuff i've eaten over CT,but was still ok.
Steak - Joops Special - Fillet stuffed with cheese & pineapple - 10/10
Prawn's - Do themselves a favour finding another supplier or upping the quality they buy, floury & generally low quality prawn for the price.

Good service, will stay on the go back to list

Beira Alta has the best prepared T-bone I have had so far. Slicing through it was like slicing through butter. Could use a bit more flavouring to make it taste even better :)

I've only ever had the steaks there, I generally don't go for seafood in a place renowned for their steaks. But ja Joops steaks are top notch.
