Restaurant Recommendations

We seem to have gone in a distinctly Indian direction, no complaints here :D

I must also give 'The Royal Delhi' in Port Elizabeth a mention.
Krish and his team there never disappoint.
They also do a lot of catering for functions and stuff at very reasonable rates.
Great little place, nice bar as well to relax in before or after meals.
I always make a point of going there whenever in PE.
The chicken and prawn and the Delhi special are winners.

Tomorrow though I will hopefully pop in at Bukhara in Cape Town.

Addictions on Greenhill Rd in Greenside is my all-time favourite restaurant. They have unusual food combinations, food's always excellent, service is good, and they're reasonably priced.

Here's an example of what I had last time I was there:
- Russian Stroganoff: finely sliced black mushroom, green peppers, and rump steak flamed in vodka, finished with cream, noodles and parmesan cheese
- Meringue filled with fynbos honey and cinnamon ice cream, topped with hot caramelised summer fruit (berries, apple, etc.)

We like trying new restaurants, so if I come across one that I visited for the first time, I will post a recommendation here. Please feel free to do the same, so we get reviews on places from a first hand perspective :D

A while ago, I recommended Trishna Indian restaurant in Illovo to a poster on this board (forget who now). Brilliant food, if you like Indian, that is.

In May, I treated my bf to a massage at the Fairlawns Spa. We had lunch at the hotel restaurant afterwards. We had excellent service and good food too, but the price is a bit steep, considering the economic climate we all find ourselves in.

This past Friday, we went to Beach Blanket Bohemia in Sunninghill. Service was OK (waiter was not the most attentive type and we had to keep our own wine glasses topped up), but the food very good. Had risotto with mushroom and bacon. Yum.

The Meat Co is a great place for a nice steak. Had one at Clearwater a few months ago. Service was a bit on the slow side, but they were very busy. But all in all a very nice experience. :)

JB's corner at melrose arch makes the best burgers in jhb...

I don't know how to put it nicely without offending anyone, but India and Durban is, well, chalk and cheese.

Blu, you will find it difficult to offend me. You will also find that I do not deem it necessary to drop the names of places I have visited and things I have done into all my conversations.

All I know is Durban "hot" and JHB "hot" are to different animals..

The best dessert I ever had was a litchi meringue concoction from Mariners in Ballito... It's called "A Glory"... Was wonderful...

Singing Fig in Norwood used to be very good. Moyo's Melrose Arch very good...

I was not name-dropping. Do you find it offensive that people travel the globe and then talk about it?

I was explaining to you that the typical Indian person you find in Durban and the typical Indian food you will find there, is not comparable to that in India. Not even almost.

If you cannot deal with that, it's your problem, not mine. If I spoke to someone about Italian cuisine and they tell me about the way traditional food is prepared in Italy, I'm not gonna get all pissy because I have never been there.

Oh my gosh, I can't belive you haven't been to Italy yet and seen the Eiffel Tower!

Oh wait, thats in London...

Ok fine, the best best best steaks in JHB, Cattle Baron, Lonehill.

Damn there I am dropping names, but I really have been to Lonehill!

Yuip, always nice.

Have a look at Rusty Hook, it is just off Beyers Naude. 4km.
It so secluded and very quite, you won't even think your in the city.

I did state you will find it difficult to offend me. And I too have travelled extensively. I just do not choose to bring it into my posts whenever possible....

Please have a read what you said again. You also did not discuss the cuisine in India but rather stated it was better to jump on a plane to India to buy the spices (your opportunity to destination drop). I then said this would seem a futile exercise when I in all likelihood could get those self same spices without flying to India! This is the truth!

I would still like you to explain to me how the spices you fetch from India will substantially differ from the ones I source here?

Hey dude, I read that as a tounge in cheek comment, why you so up-tight?
Is it that time of the month?

But heck I agree, better to fly to India that go to durbs, the spices will be about 4 weeks fresher....plus come on, would much rather vist Goa than Durbs any day...

Ok, I will begin saving, first have to buy girl child a car, then pay varsity fees, then who knows what, but once that is finished I'm off to India to get fresh spices!!!!

I am sorry I jumped down your throat. My apologies.

The spices we bought in Kerala, India really made a difference. I cannot authoratively state that we get "bad" quality of spices here, because they are mostly imported from India and the East anyway, but that which we bought there was simply fresher, because we went straight to the spice plantations and bought from them. When I use them in my cooking, they are more pronounced in the final product.

As far as the cuisine in India, the city of Hyderabad is known as the home of Biriyani. It is traditionally a Muslim dish, but integrated into Hindu cooking as well. If you go to Hyderabad, you find the many different ways of cooking biriyani.

DJStealth mentioned Goan cuisine - in the south of India, the food becomes stronger and spicier and they use more coconut in their cooking.

In this way, when I traveled the country, I learnt the finer nuances of the various types of Indian cuisine.

Sorry again if I was rude to you.

Dear Blu, I will show you a little further down, exactly how to offend Lancingboi (he is immune to this insult now) very quickly - watch and learn.

Oh hell, this is getting so exciting. I am close to pissing my pants, thoroughly enjoying this guys. Please keep up the great work in my absence and don't stop, I want some of this confrontational action.

BTW, Lancingboi - I just re-read your posts in a few of the financial threads and you really do need to tone down the salesman talk. You sales people have no idea how to separate work and play- always looking for your next [-]victim[/-] commission cheque. I will be sure to warn future readers of such threads...

Sorry again if I was rude to you.

I much prefer the defensive, edgier side of you. And don't start apologising and letting Lancingboi get the better of you - fight your corner properly damnit! Namedrop the hell out of this thread if you want, and let us know where you find the freshest spices, regardless of cost. Lancelot is obviously experiencing a heavy flow this month - don't let it get to you!!!

Seems the midnight hour brings out a different side of people ;)

I really do not mean to offend any poster here, Lancelot included. I guess we all have our ups and downs. Thank God I am not a sharetrader, I'd likely be mean all the time - all that stress would get to me...

Ag, its only as stressful as you let it get. The same with anything you do. Its all relative I guess, hence why there are few things that stress me out these days.

What do you mean you dont intend to offend anyone here? Not even a little bit? Just a hint of antagonism every now and then? You dont get that feeling? Lancelot and I have our word exchanges once a week or so just for the hell of it. It is well worth it...:D

Oh, I do get offensive and antagonistic on this board. Not in a '**** you' kind of way, more sarcastic mostly. Luckily most people are so obsessed with their own posts, they do not read half of what other people say!

The subtle humour lost on the unfortunate majority is always the most rewarding for me...

OK, so back to restaurants:

The Codfather. I love the one in Camps Bay. The one in Sandton is also really good - I just love the concept of choosing your own fish from a fishmonger and having them cook it for you - can get rather pricey when you order the crayfish, langoustines, Oysters and rock cod though!

Anyone from Durbs remember the Langoustine By The Sea? Next to the Hypermarket? That was a terrific restaurant - loved it...
