Restaurants should offer toothbrushes after meals?

I've had this odd idea for a while now; wouldn't it be nice if restaurants offered diners cheap toothbrushes, tiny toothpaste holders and a place to brush teeth after meals?

I don't know about anyone else, but I like to brush my teeth after a meal and sometimes after leaving a restaurant the first thing I want to do is go brush my teeth. It can even just be a cheap R2 toothbrush and they can give you the option to pay R5 or something to get a toothbrush and a bit of toothpaste. It would certainly give a lot of people peace of mind if they're on a date or something.

So, bad idea, good idea?

Not a bad idea. In Thailand they have all the kids brush their teeth in the mornings and after lunch at school. Personally I probably would never use it but others might.

A lot of places like Nando's already have those open hand basins where you can wash your hands before eating.
Not much more hassle to add a disposable toothbrush dispenser.
I like it. Would use it after going to a place like The Butcher Shop or Meat Market.

Bad.

Your tooth enamel is still soft from all the acid involved in eating your food, including fizzy cooldrinks etc.
Brushing just after eating = nono.

This: saliva release also plays a part. Brushing within 30 minutes of a consumption activity is bad for your teeth - don't tell the OCD lot that.

It would be gross seeing other people brushing in the open.

I was going to say this. I always thought I was being good to my teeth by brushing straight after meals, until I found this out.

EDIT: Chewing gum is good, though?

Anything not abrasive.
Best is probably flouride mouthwash.

What is the etiquette around using toothpicks?

I like to clean between my teeth after eating but I find it's a bit awkward to do so in public.

They could dish these out with the bill:

But yeah - a dispenser in the bathrooms would be cool...right next to the condoms.

When I go out for a dinner date my rules are:

1. Drink white wine only ... you know it makes you horribly unattractive after the second glass.
2. NO SPINACH!!!!!!!

Stick to that and there should be no need to brush your teeth right after a meal in a restaurants.

Still - if there's any prospective making out coming your way that evening (after the dinner), it would be nice to clean up before you head out to the next venue/party/whatever. Making out is kinda irrelevant though - I'd still prefer a minty fresh clean mouth for the rest of the evening & I'd happily pay R5 for a disposable toothbrush and toothpaste at a restaurant.

Well.... that could depend on the situation. A naturally tasting mouth can be much nicer tasting than a Aquafresh mouth. One new year I went up to bed so long while my then ex was drinking still with his boet (they were visting at my place and staying the night). Anyway .... he came up eventually .... and gave me a kiss goodnight. That whiskey and his natural tasting mouth got me going.

My point being .... a freshly brushed and mouth washed mouth is not always very erotic.

^ That's true - especially if you've brushed & they've just eaten an apple. Was just thinking of getting rid of any teeth klingons before heading out :).

What you really want to do is flos.
Brushing does not remove the meat/onion taste that will return again after a few minutes.
