Good Morning myBB,

I have been working abroad for the last 7.5 years, spending the last 2.5 yrs in Houston, Texas. I am employed in the upstream oilfield industry. I am on US L1a visa which is valid till Jun 2017, with an option to extend by additional two years.

US, have been very fun, however I am homesick, and am planning to return to SA as soon as next month. The biggest challenge is being employable in South Africa. The experience that I have gained over the last years cannot easily be utilized in SA unless offshore drilling and/or Fracking takes off in the country. By qualification I am a Geologist, but I hardly used Geology in the last 4 years of my career. I thought about transitioning into the mining Industry but the requirement for job posts is to have a extensive mining experience or BSc. Honors, I only have a Bachelor's degree.

I could opt to stay in USA, but that would just leave me miserable. I really want to return to South Africa. Any advice on what to do?

Thanks in advance.

You want come back to this racist bantustan???

Employment is poor at the moment .... Its an employer's market.Having said that, skills are at a low too.
BBEEE laws have just been amended, in favour of the majority race group .... this will affect employment.
Crime is worse in SA than in the USA by far .... despite us here trying to rationalise things.

I have been spending a fair amount of my time in Orlando / De Land / Tampa (Fl) area each year, but live in SA, (too old to move, young enough to travel frequently.)

Personally, I prefer the USA to SA ATM since the Zuma administration, and SA is getting expensive,

Good luck anyway - whatever you decide.

I am as Black as they come, not light skinned, really BLACK. The color of my skin will not help me get a job in SA. I know SA is corrupt, and this is one of the top things that really discourage me from coming back. As well as crime. I may be generalizing to some extended, but in order to get anywhere in SA you have to be politically connected. To move this country forward, corruption will have to be eliminated.

Another generalization, SA is racist in nature, people see color before everything.

I have been actively job hunting in SA for the last 4 years, I stopped applying for vacancies in state entities about 3 years ago because those vacancies are filled by "The Politically connected" before they are even advertised.

"Sorry about politics, got a little carried away, derailing my own thread."

Guess who's back? :D

Your never going to forget the past :D

Anyways, married for 2.5 yrs and wifey 7 weeks pregnant.

Aren't they gonna Frack in the Karoo soon?

I am excited about Fracking in Karoo, I am following those developments closely. I have also been following the Fracking activities in Limpopo, next week I have a meeting with the CEO of the company fracking in Limpopo. It will be interesting what the outcome of the meeting will be.

Good luck, but what all the other guys said. If you are that homesick, come back for an extended holiday. Once you have been mugged twice, you will get back on that plane ASAP.

If she is an USA citizen then I would stay there.

If not, well, then you may have to come back. Still think that you should stay there and get your visa extended.

Build a family with existing family? :whistling:

Damn, I missed this guy. Welcome back, but seriously, stay in the USA. This country is a dump.
