Reuse of WiFi equipment

Apologies if this has been answered before, but I couldn't manage the right search words to find an answer.

What are the reuse possibilities of WiFi equipment? Do the WUGs use the same equipment as most WISPs?

I'm planning on buying a,
* 2.4 GHz antenna
* PoE unit
* WiFi router
but I don't want the equipment to be totally useless if I move or maybe switch to another WISP. Will this be a problem or can these items be reused?

Thanks

You might have issues with proprietary protocols, like some of the mikrotik functionality, but other than that, I can't see why it shouldn't work. Assuming, of course, that the frequencies are in the same bands. At least the POE should be fairly generic!

If you ever plan on joining a wug, definately consider Mikrotik - afaik most of the wisps use them too...

Also make sure if the Wug in your area uses 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz. Some Wugs run both, but it is very hard to say if that hardware will be useful.

@ CR34M3 - The nice thing about the Mikrotik equipment is that you can change the radio card on 95% on the models, so it is easy to switch between 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz. (The Antenna would need to be changed as well as the Radio)

Hi

Most radios do 2.4 and 5.8, so you just have to replace the antenna.

Also, the mikrotik routerbord are very powerfull and has a 101 uses.

I forgot to add;

The WISP I'm joining is sourcing the equipment -- are there any specific brands/types of equipment I should steer clear of? Especially the router boards, as they seem to make up the bulk of the price.
