The fire devastated areas near Betty's Bay, Pringle Bay, Hangklip and Rooi Els.

Helicopters have been brought in to help fight the blaze, which saw people evacuated from their homes on Wednesday night, though many have since returned.

"We have approximately 50 crew on the ground; then we also have 60 crew from Working on Fire, Environmental Services and CapeNature," Smith earlier told News24, adding that some members were on 24-hour shifts.

The Overstrand municipality is offering a R5000 reward for anyone with information on who lit a flare in Betty's Bay leading to a fire in the mountains, according to Netwerk24.

Overstrand municipality's fire chief, Lester Smith, told News24's sister publication that the flare was let off at midnight on January 1.

It landed in the Kogelberg nature reserve, starting a fire. Forty-five firefighters are currently working to put the blaze out.

A man has been arrested following a devastating blaze that tore through the Overstrand area, in the Western Cape.

According to police, a 34-year-old man had been arrested for contravention of the Nature Conservation Act - a charge more serious than arson.

"We arrested the suspect for the fires. We've got witnesses also. We locked the suspect at Kleinmond police station," Captain Harold Nqwenani told News24 on Thursday.

Glen Craig hotel, a wasteland. Was a hell of a night here, fire still burning on the Kogelberg mountain range, high up IMG-20190103-WA0009.jpeg IMG-20190103-WA0008.jpeg IMG-20190103-WA0007.jpeg IMG-20190103-WA0006.jpeg IMG-20190103-WA0005.jpeg

Insurance I assume is in place, daft not to have it, rebuilding as it is a listed UNESCO site will take time.

I would also assume business continuity insurance is in place as well... if the hotel was doing ok for itself that is.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Im also glad they have a suspect in custody.

Am I the only one who thinks a R5000 reward is paltry?
