Who told you that?

Churches don't pay Municipal Tax, or Business Tax (Non profit Tax) ... Just like in the USA.
But the Employees of the Church do most certainly pay income tax.
 
I'm not one to hate on people, but he was not exactly a humble pastor, punting prosperity at every turn, not my cup of tea.

I think his house was even on Top Billing many years ago.. Also, he loved cozying up with the politicians

Yep. Look I am fairly religious. I was a full time missionary for a few years when younger. Part of that time I spent in Chatsworth down in KZN and there these evangelicals are a dime a dozen. They despised us and worked their behinds off to make their congregation stay away as we were a lay ministry (no one gets paid, fully volunteer led church). That was like Kryptonite to them.

Anyways, a lady I knew down there was close friends with the manager of one of the top Umhlanga hotels. These evangelicals clubbed together to bring out a top American evangelical, Benny Hinn or something. When he arrived he booked out an entire floor of this top hotel and refused all normal security checks. Eventually it was insisted upon and he would only let the hotel manager do it. When we inspected the rooms and what they brough in he found out this guy had a huge entourage of people who were professional actors really who he would heal from wheelchairs etc. All the props, wigs, etc were there in the rooms and suitcases. This US pastor booked out a massive stadium and people were literally taking off their wedding rings to put in his collection plate. Complete fake. So yes, while I get there are some who are genuine most that I met and saw were snakes. They would demand 50% tithing from their congregations so they could drive the latest Merc, while upgrading their church's, etc. They then drove those mercs to nearby areas away from their congregations to pick up prostitutes. Cannot stand hypocrites.
