It was first reported by the Washington Post last week that the RIAA was suing the Russian online music distribution company Mediaservices, which owns AllofMP3.com and allTunes.com, for illegally selling copyrighted music.

The companies behind the claim, which include the major record labels Arista Records LLC, Warner Bros. Records Inc., Capitol Records Inc. and UMG Recordings Inc., filed the suit in a New York federal court claiming that "...Mediaservices' sites sell millions of songs by their artists without paying them 'a dime' for the right to do so."

"Defendant's entire business ... amounts to nothing more than a massive infringement of plaintiffs' exclusive rights under the Copyright Act and New York law," according to the lawsuit.

As part of their claim, the labels are seeking $150,000 USD for each of the 11 million songs that were downloaded from June to October 2006 from the AllofMP3.com website.

Now how much money the site has made is unknown but, certainly its profits are not in the trillions of dollars.

"AllofMP3 understands that several U.S. record label companies filed a lawsuit against Media Services in New York," an unnamed "senior company official" stated. "This suit is unjustified as AllofMP3 does not operate in New York. Certainly the labels are free to file any suit they wish, despite knowing full well that AllofMP3 operates legally in Russia. In the mean time, AllofMP3 plans to continue to operate legally and comply with all Russian laws."

Shame those poor artists must be really missing that extra line of cocaine that they go and start a silly preceding like this. Whats weird is they think people care about American law. If anything American law is going downhill one way.

The most disturbing thing about this article was the image next to it:

Nah, that image is not at all disturbing. Who better than Ivan to give the middle finger to the RIAA? :D

I dont like Russia`s Gazprom but I do like what the boys at allofmp3.com are doing.

You like the fact that they are selling pirated music to people too stupid/lazy to get it for free?

Technically the music is not pirated in Russia proper.

i wouldnt call people getting music cheaper then the average joe stupid. maybe slightly stupider then the person getting music for free.

Seriously, too many people with a righteous carrot shoved up their ass and feigning to be defenders of capitalisms. Thankfully that generation is a dying breed.

Never mind ex-KGB, they're more likely current Russian Mafia

I know a lot of people who use the site. Often. Theyre normally busy folk who do not have the time to fight with shaping and p2p downloads. Also, at a $1 an album.... its cheaper than torrenting!

Oh I am no RIAA supporter and I would be more that happy to see it go down in flames. I just believe it to be stupid to pay for something illegal when you may as well get it for free just as illegally.

Perhaps illegal isn't the best word as its legality is questionable in many countries and the site itself still legally resides in that Russian loop-hole. But what is the difference between that and freely available music from P2P sites? The artists still see no part of the sales and more than likely any purchase from the site is probably funding the Russian mafia. But to each their own.

I hate the RIAA! For so many years they've ripped us off & we had to pay exorbant prices for a CD, LP or tape.

Now they're crying 'Wolf'.

Shame, Britney Spears can only afford the V3 model of her jet aircraft rather than the gilded V4 :( Cry me a bucket.

And on the point its "illegal" well its not. Its not even a loop-hole. Its russian law. Why the HELL should they have to comply with crappy American law? If there is any type of "illegality" being performed here its with the American system.

The 'guy on the street' in America can not afford to lobby the US gov like RIAA does. So the law is written by those in power and money and for those in power and money. The fact that Russia does not follow suite is great for them, and I hope they can keep it up.

Why should we be accountable for America`s evil system?

The laws in the US are broken, but in the end allofmp3 are selling other people's works without compensation. So the top artists are still rich and the RIAA members are still raking in massive amounts of cash and then screwing their artists on top of that. I really don't care, I just thought it stupid to pay for something that may aswell be free.

Actually from my understanding Allofmp3 is compensating the artists according to Russian Law. But even if the Law in the US are broken, they do NOT apply to Allofmp3, since they do not operate from inside the borders of the US.

That is the way I understand it.

Either way, **** the RIAA.

Totally agree, Fsck the RIAA.

What worries me is that the artists don't stand up and say this as well because they surely see all this money pouring into the RIAA coffers, and they don't see a cent of it.

Fair enough the RIAA are a bunch of parasites but despite what w1z4rd believes dont you think the artist deserves their cut? You can be pretty sure the Russian's haven't been paying out the royalties they've supposedly been 'collecting'.
