Rich, or throwing money around?

One of our business associates is married and has 2 or 3 kids (can't quite remember!) His wife has a very good job - earns approx R 100k/month gross. He earns approx R 40k/month. So money is not a problem.

They have gone on a traveling frenzy! Went to Durban in early April for a 2 week holiday, now off to Cape Town for an extended long weekend and then to the USA on a 3 week holiday in June. This all in the space of 3 months.

I love travel and I am sure you may say it is my jealousy speaking (which it probably is, because the guy is as dumb as a brick and we always have to bail him out! :D), but it sounds excessive to me. Or not?

I mean, if there is a recession going on, would you not cut your holidays and put away some for the rainy days ahead?

A household on R140k/month should be able to do that quite comfortably I would think.

What recession? I had to go to Sportsmans Warehouse yesterday and the place was packed! Retail therapy maybe?

That's not excessive at all in relation to their income. I don't see the problem...

Theres alot of people like that...
Think about it, if they had to "save" 40k every month for 6 months they have 240k to use for holidays...

...or none of your beeswax?

It becomes my beeswax when I have to bail his sorry ass out more than once :D

Odd, considering you see yourself as some financial expert. What do you imagine those 3 holidays cost for a family of 4/5 living at 4 star standard? Not to mention the wife is in mining, where lay-offs are quite common and the husband is a consultant, which is one of the easiest people to get rid of when times are tight.

Anyhow, their financial planning is not my baby, I was just raising it as I thought it excessive.

I'm no financial planner, that's for sure. However based on their combined income and considering that you probably don't know whether or not they had much of this saved or invested already (more than likely), I don't see the issue at all. They can afford to do so, so why not?

I've been spending like crazy lately as well, however I can afford to do so. I wonder if my so called friends are pulling the judgemental card on me behind my back as well?

These are not friends of ours. They are business associates. I do not socialise with them but we do get along. Please do not turn my question about whether it is excessive into another round of high drama. It was just a question.

I am sure people think I spend sinful amounts of money on certain things too. As you said, each one does what she pleases.

If they have money they should spend it, if i earned a combined 140k with my fiancee i for sure would travel the world, i would not throw money away on expensive cars and houses but i would travel for sure and live very well.

What is the point of dying rich when you can see the world?

A 3 week US holiday for their family probably costs around R160 000.
My sister went last year, Disneyland, Vegas, Grand Canyon etc.

With their income R200 000 ayear on holidays wouldn't be too much.
Maybe they've been saving up money for the US holiday.

If I had R140k a month, I would do 2 things:

1) Travel as much as possible
2) Buy & install a urinal in Killadoob's bathroom for him to finally be a man!

As I said, it was merely a Q on my side. It sounded excessive to me. Will let it rest and wish them bon voyage.

LOL! Of course it is green.

Well, our client informed him already that as of May 2009 his responsibilties are being cut and he will only work for them one day per week or something like that. Naturally Mr Blu will feel sorry for him and help him out ...
