Only around 10 mill zar (500k euro) to get a golden visa for Spain. I'll take two at those prices ....... Portugal is cheaper, but its still around 7 mill zar (350k euro)

with flights and docs and tests 60K, so with savings about 160K, but its a lot more now

Huh, assuming I could get entry into another country, I could pack it in and still have a decent chunk left over. Would have to start from scratch in terms of retirement but good to know that I could leave if I wanted to.

It looks like we are going to see a lot of tax increases. I work bloody hard for my money and I worked hard to get where I am now. Keep having to pay more taxes just to see the taxes being wasted.

If I could I would have left too.

And work entry level job in Canada or Australia, cause your education and experience to them seen as schooling under a tree. Speaking from feedback on people who moved in engineering and finance fields...

We left some time ago to Australia and have no regrets.
Here we get real benefits for the taxes we pay.

PS We weren't rich Saffers.

I have cousins/aunts/uncles/closeish family in Aus, so if I were to bail I would probably go here.

I do have some distant cousins in the UK, but I imagine it would be harder for me to get in. Also, kak weather so less keen.

That's the problem I have. My skills are worth more here than overseas. Businesses in the developed world are increasingly shipping out jobs to people like me in other countries. So if I were to move I'd probably struggle to find any decent work as copywriter.

We won't be sticking around to see how South Africa turns out, especially with our son having been born 8 weeks ago.

Moved to Malta with the wife and kids in March 2019 with around R175000 (after plane tickets and shipping of our things). So far it has been the best decision I have ever made. Climate is very similar to South Africa, taxes we pay go into free schooling and medical, and English is spoken by almost everybody. Even though it's a small island, you can use the Residence card to travel throughout the EU countries. I would recommend it for anyone who can do it. Just the peace of mind alone is worth it.

That's on my radar to move over the next few years.

But salaries and rent seem to be an issue ?
Lower salaries, but rent is still high ?
Whereabouts do you stay ?

Where you guys going?
And what does it take to move?
Going back to the UK. I lived there for 8 years before.

To move? Depends on the support system you have there. When I went the first time I had a lot of family there or just left, so I had a lot of places to stay and time to get a job. This time I have a job waiting for me when I get there. I will have an idea of where I'll be renting. So much easier with everything on the internet.

You need, at least, 3 month's living expenses. Rent (2 months and deposit), council tax, utilities, food and transport. Take the first job you get even if it is minimum wage. Earning something is better than earing nothing and still having to cover costs.

Left in 2003. Wasn't rich. Had to work my a** off to get where I'm now. Have worked since then in the ME. Live in Finland when I'm off. Went back in December 2015, with my wife. Jeez, what a cluster. Was supposed to stay 3 weeks. Left after 10 days. She thought the country was backwards and beyond 3rd world. Haven't been back and won't go back again. Sister and BIL leaving SA now. Last of the family in SA.

This is one significant factor when dealing with staying.
What are the rules on having two places... e.g. I live and work abroad and come to SA for 3 months of the year (for example)?

If you’re spending over 90 days per year in the country you could well be a tax resident and be obliged to pay taxes. Are you strictly spending less than this?

Otherwise it depends on property ownership, permanent residence elsewhere, location of immediate family and other soft factors that are fairly nebulous.
