Daimler is the name of the company that owns both Mercedes-Benz and the world’s biggest semi truckmaker. But those two concerns will split, Daimler said Wednesday.

Eventually, the maker of Mercedes-Benz won’t be called Daimler anymore but instead “Mercedes-Benz.”

The move appears in large part to be a stock market play, as it’s a good time to be an automaker on the stock market, or at least good if you can argue that you represent the future. The move also seems intended to shape things up in Daimler’s truck division.

Mercedes and Daimler have long been synonymous but if only for elegance’s sake I’m happy there will soon be separation. Daimler sounds like a semi truck company as much as Mercedes-Benz sounds like a car one.

Daimler to rename itself ‘Mercedes-Benz’ and spin off truck division

Daimler has announced plans to make a “fundamental change” to its structure, saying it will likely spin off its truck division and rename itself as Mercedes-Benz.

The German multinational says the move to create two separate companies is "designed to unlock the full potential" of its businesses in "a zero-emissions, software-driven future”.

“The supervisory board and the board of management of Daimler today agreed to evaluate a spin-off of its Truck and Bus business and begin preparations for a separate listing of Daimler Truck,” the company said in a statement.

“It is intended that a significant majority stake in Daimler Truck will be distributed to Daimler shareholders. The Daimler Truck business will have fully independent management, stand-alone corporate governance including an independent chairman of the supervisory board, and is targeted to qualify as a DAX company.”

No more Daimler-Benz

Germany’s oldest automotive company is splitting.

Daimler and Mercedes-Benz have agreed to become two entirely separate entities, with separate development resources for heavy vehicle and passenger cars.

For decades the Daimler-Benz corporate structure has been a source of novelty in the global automotive industry. Very few traditional car brands are part of an organisation that also used resources, in a direct distribution, to develop heavy trucks and buses.

Volvo split its passenger car and truck divisions a long time ago. For Mercedes-Benz, scale is always important and it believed that there were commonalities between the smart driving truck technologies and a trend towards autonomous passenger vehicles. This no longer appears to be the case.

In the new structure, Daimler becomes purely a truck and bus business, with Mercedes-Benz, wholly focused on passenger vehicles.
