Rising oil costs are not to blame for South Africa's high petrol prices, according to Outa

DO NOT. I repeat, DO NOT. Ever. Buy a motorcycle to save money.. Or fuel.. It doesn't work that way.
Sure, you might get 0.8/100km better consumption, but your tyres are gonna die in 12000km, you chain, sprocket and gear needs maintenance and needs replacing, roughly 20k for the chain. Services are the same, roughly, only you need to do 2 of them - annual and distance. Insurance is more expensive, unless you have had your license for a while already. The gear is expensive, those need replacing as well.

Sure, buy it to save time if you commute a lot, sure buy it to feel freedom. Don't fool yourself thinking you're gonna save anything. And beyond that, even if you save some fuel on your commute, you'll burn it going on a trip over the weekend. And don't kid yourself and think that you won't, you will.

I think you may have mistakenly quoted me, I own a bicycle which costs more than most peoples Bikes, a new chain is roughly R1000, a service is R400 and a major service is R800. No petrol needed other than food.

I would never drive it to work down William Nicol that's a death sentence with the way people drive but I do enjoy a leisurely 60+KM cycle around the cradle on a Sunday. ;)

Buy one with a driveshaft instead of a chain.

And I get 20,000-30,000 on a tyre.

And you don’t do annual and distance services, you do one or the other. If you are hitting an annual you aren’t riding enough anyway.

Ultimately time and enjoyment is what you gain. Costs are much the same or on par with cars while giving you way more enjoyment for the same money.

That being said with the future being electric a lot of this is going to change drastically with only tyres remaining a major expense.

I have changed my sprockets and chain twice in about 7 years. I think the last time it cost me around R2000 for the parts and took me about an hour to do.

A service costs me about R700 for an oil service, R300~ for an air filter which is only changed every 24000km. The plugs are iridium so last very long but i think last time I changed them it cost me about R500.

Woah guys it was mostly just another reason, I have a keen interest in motorcycles and just getting started. Its a long story but not going to air it all here but hoping to pickup something like a Ninja 400/300 RC390, Duke 390, MT07 or something of the sorts sometime in the future.

The jab was mostly just how stupid the fuel price is currently. Greatly appreciate the advice and seeing the costs, but most of the people I have spoken to say it's not overkill expensive compared to the cost of a CAR. I wouldn't be doing long runs in Durban as the furtherest I would go is Glenwood to Durban North.

I honestly have no idea what's going on or what thread I'm in. Buy a bike that looks cool and makes you smile. Those are small dual sports for me... or my Grom which I miss very much :crying:

Days like this when I miss "cheap" SA fuel. During the manufactured fuel crisis recently, it was over R50 a litre at some stations - and people were still queuing.

And a lot of it was vastly over inflated, unnecessary or super brand name examples in this thread.

It doesn’t need to be like that.

This is and always was a 'Tax Grab'...what do you expect after 27 years of money grabbing, basically there are two kinds of people in this world:

1. Those with brains;
2. Those without brains.

I do NOT give a fcuck who you are but if you think you can just take and take and then NOT give back and THEN still think there will be no consequences - all of this comes down on the ANC Government or non-Government and their Management principle of: 'All authority but NO Responsibility'

Oh, shti I forgot, it is because of Apartheid, how could I've been so stupid?! My apologies....

Get more out of it? When last did you compare?

It is very clear to most sane people that inflation figures are not accurate when used in relation to salary increases, i.e they will say base inflation is for example 4% for the year, an average salary increase might be say 6%, but in reality expenses have risen 50% in the duration of a year.

you can see it as well with the fact that now 2 adults will work in highly skilled professions and have maybe 1 kid and struggle to maintain a middle class lifestlye whereas in the past 1 adult in the family could work in even a semi-skilled profession and support a family of 4+ kids with a large property etc.

Just over the last year things have gotten over 5% more expensive. I've seen something go up from R50 to R55, that's 10% at one time and it's not like there wasn't a price increase during the year. I don't care what the official figures say as it's not focused on the things people who just get by use. I can see we're able to afford less and less and that's without the recent rates increases.
