Can this number be traced via rica that he replied back with?

Should be able to (but it might be a pre-activated SIM) and you can also blacklist the IMEI number.

Post the picture on the WP traffic page, I've seen loads of people find their phones...someone will recognize him as he looks like a radio DJ or something...just don't accuse him of being the thief..but do mention he is in possession of a phone stolen in an armed robbery :)

this is not my experience, and I've been living here for three years.

The past three times we've been to Long Street at night
1. Attempted theft of my wife's cellphone, beat the crap out of the guy until he threatened to call the police, idjit.
2. Successful theft of friends wife's handbag at some Mexican place (incl iPhone)
3. Some street ****er swiped my r30 ebay watch... I remember him doing sone weird, trying to be overly friendly, and sell me something handshake, 5min later I noticed my watch was gone. (The reason I use cheap crap when we go out, either stolen, or fights (more northern suburbs)

Cape Town CBD is a dangerous place. Don't show any valuables.

I work in the CBD for 3 years and the only incident I had was a suspicious dude that I suspect was a Nigerian drug dealer or a pervert as he stalked me for half an hour as I was going to shops. Another time was and a schit you not, some tik kop that wanted to mug me for my Hungry Lion hamburger but he nearly got a p-klap from our building janitor.

Both happened earlier this year during the same week.

I live in the CBD, I don't feel safe before or after working hours and weekends. Non-stop stream of beggars. But this country is f'd everywhere really, the suburbs I grew up in is not safe at all.

because i was stalking you, it does not make me nigerian - or a drug dealer :D

probably was not a tik-kop (poor buggers get blamed for everything these days).
tik-kops are usually skinny as **** (they never eat / have no time for eating)

the upside of being a tik-kop, is if you injure yourself, you never require expensive x-rays - the doctor just makes you stand in front of a bright light

Potentially dangerous yes, if they are armed and determined to take your possessions by force.

Another one to look out for is if someone comments on your shoes. If you fall for this then they get up close to you and I suppose try pickpocket you.

They have tried this 3 times on me. First time the guy commented on my shoe size and then sidled up to me as I was friggin getting in my car; as as he did so my hands instinctively covered my pockets.

2nd time (again the shoe size comment) I just ignored the guy and moved away.

3rd time the dude asked what kind of shoes I was wearing.

Freakin' annoying but I probably get targeted more as I probably look like a tourist to them.
