Roku 3 Not Turning On: Power Supply?

Hi all.

I've had a Roku 3 for quite a while now, and it's refusing to turn on today. The light is off, so it doesn't seem to be getting any power.

I've been using the power supply that came with it (it's a US one, and came with a 2-pin adaptor).

Can I get this to replace it with? http://www.mantech.co.za/ProductInfo.aspx?Item=372M0007

Also, does anyone know what size the pin is for the Roku 3? I think that 2.1mm is too big. If so, where can I get an adaptor like these? dc-converter-5-5mm-2-1mm-3-5mm-1-35mm-4mm-1-7mm-4-8mm-1-7mm-samsonite-1409-29-samsonite@11.jpg

Thanks in advance! :)

That all depends on which roku 3 you have, some had 6V psus while others were 12V.

I have the 4230R, which is 12V. Was just wondering if there was anything else to consider with that Mantech one. And I'm still not sure what the pin size is.

Worst comes to worst you can just cut off the old plug and splice it to the new power supply.

That's true. I hadn't thought of that. While I'd like to avoid it, at least it is an option. Thanks!

Has anyone else had one of these burn out? I hope I'm right and it is the power adapter, and not something wrong with the Roku itself.

Calipers to measure the existing one with? Google seems to think 1.35mm but not sure which model 3 that is for.

Edit: Did a google for '4230R 3.5mm 1.35mm' and lot's of hits came up so it's definitely 3.5mm/1.35mm for the 4230R ;)

Use a voltmeter to check the voltage, if any, coming out of the power adapter. That should tell you what the problem is.

Thanks in advance! :)

This happened to 2 of my Roku's in the house already. Thought they were dead until I used another rokus power supply and it turned on without any issue. Was also using the standard plugs with adapters.

I ended up buying this: https://avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/power-cables-universal-mains-adapter-12v-p-761

It works perfectly. I ended up buying a few extra to replace all my roku power supplies and have a spare just in case. The service from AV Supply is also outstanding.

Have you got a way to test the power supply? Only ask because both my Roku's that died, I remember at least he one had the status light blink really slow (can't remember now if the other did too or showed no sing of life).

Awesome! Thanks very much :)

I really should get one, considering how cheap they are. I'll see if a friend has one. At least a replacement PSU is also cheap.

Unfortunately no way at home, but I'll check if I can take it somewhere. Thank you, that looks ideal! And it's cheaper than the alternatives I found, which didn't even have different pin sizes (just 2.1mm).

There's no answer when I try and call to check stock, but I think I'll just order one anyway. If the problem's not my PSU, I'll have it as a spare. How long did each of yours last before they died?

My Roku 3 PSU also died a while ago.
I replaced it with one of those Ellies PSUs (the ones with selectable voltages) which you can get at most supermarkets. I just spliced the Roku plug onto it.

How long did yours last? I wonder why so many people have had them die. Mine lasted just over a year.

Just an update for anyone else who has this problem:

I bought the PSU that weelzSA linked above: https://avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/power-cables-universal-mains-adapter-12v-p-761

My Roku is working again, fortunately :)

Thanks again everyone!

That's great news! The service from @avsupply is excellent.

I think I have a total of 4 or 5 now (2 spare just incase). My Roku 3 I got the week it launched and only now started acting up this year so lasted a long time. I have since replaced it with the new Premier+ tho. The other 2 were barely a year old before the one psu died. I just decided to replace all the plugs with those.

Glad you got it sorted tho.

It is indeed! The person I spoke to offered to let me collect in Claremont instead of Edgemead, as I live in the Southern Suburbs in Cape Town, which made it much more convenient. I didn't know about the site before this.

Oh wow. I wonder why they're burning out so fast. They're rated for our voltage as well as the US one.

How does the Premier+ compare?
