I'm looking for someone to explain or point me to a thread re Kodi etc.
I've heard you can purchase a standalone box that has xmc etc on and plug and play with your tv and internet connection?
Is this true? how does it work and is there anyone in gauteng that has these devices?

As far as I know, Kodi (previously XBMC) dosen't work on Roku and you'll need another media player that supports Kodi.
You can purchase something like this (just not sure if it's decent): http://www.takealot.com/mx4-quad-core-android-tv-box/PLID41462280 or http://shop.dbg.co.za/media_players/ - these should come with Kodi pre loaded.

I have a media player running Kodi and use Exodus to streammovies/series and SportsDevil to stream sport. Once you've got a device, you can use this to install these addons: https://seo-michael.co.uk/how-to-install-exodus-for-kodi/

Good luck

Just buy yourself a raspberry pi 3 and load kodi onto it... The new one has built in wifi and bluetooth, so you can use wifi or an ethernet cable and get a remote.. Probably the cheapest route to go as well.

Use your Android phone and install Kore. This is a remote for kodi. You can then control your Kodi from your cell phone. Works like a bomb for me.

Also, the MX4 box should work well. I have a very entry level http://www.minix.us/products/neog4.html as my kodi box and have been using only this for the last 6-8 months to do all my streaming and using my cell phone as a remote.

I just wouldn't recommend buying any of the "pre-loaded" boxes, i.e. the ones that come pre-installed with Kodi and very questionable plugins. Honestly though I'm not a very big fan of any of these Android boxes as they're generally all using an interface not optimized for TVs (they're meant for phones) and they're clunky to use. Something with a TV optimized interface is much better imo, like the nVIDIA Shield (which uses Android TV) or a Roku, Apple TV.

My next streaming box is going to be the Shield as it will soon also double as a Plex server.

Roku will not allow Kodi app onto its system because of the 3rd party piracy apps. Roku is a great device if you willing to pay for content and have a good US redirector probably the best streaming device in the world. I agree with Johnzoid erg do not buy a preloaded android box as these boxes will work for a month or two then you need to do maintenance upkeep as they keep cracking down on the 3rd party pirate apps. Rather go the legitimate route saves a lot of problems. Also the guys selling these boxes are using other developers apps so they have no clue what damage or what the app does in the background .
